As Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Perry J. Brown is the chief academic officer for The University of Montana. The Provost's most important duty is oversight of the academic operations of the University. Under the direction of the President, Provost Brown ensures that UM continues to pursue academic excellence and promote student success. In this effort, the Provost is supported by the academic Deans and the Registrar, who are each responsible for their respective operations.
Dr. Brown is Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at The University of Montana-Missoula. He has served UM since 2008 as Associate Provost for Graduate Education, and since 1994 as Dean and Professor, College of Forestry and Conservation, and Director of the Montana Forest and Conservation Experiment Station. He has considerable expertise in natural resource social science, policy and planning, recreation behavior and planning, and wilderness studies. His Ph.D. is from Utah State University and emphasized outdoor recreation and social psychology. A lifelong resident of the western United States, he has served on the faculties of Utah State University, Colorado State University, and Oregon State University, in addition to The University of Montana. Provost Brown and Vice President for Student Affairs Branch convened a committee to review the programs that support Native American students at The University of Montana. The committee's preliminary findings are now available.
The HERI faculty survey and summaries of results are now available on the Faculty Development Office website. Summaries describe teaching practices, scholarship, and use of time by faculty. Results show UM faculty to be impressively civic minded.

The University's Global Leadership Initiative (GLI) provides students the coursework, extracurricular experiences, guidance, and support necessary to develop leadership skills for the global century.
A committee composed of campus community members has completed a report assessing the University's computer lab and cloud computing needs.
The University of Montana Strategic Plan 2012-2020 is the culmination of collaborative leadership and development to identify and align the strategic issues and priorities of the University in execution of the 2020 Strategic Vision.
