Recruiting Policies

Third-Party Recruiter Policy

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) defines a third-party recruiter as an individual, agency, or organization that recruits candidates for temporary, part-time, or full-time employment opportunities for another organization. Third-Party Recruiters are expected to agree to these Third-Party Recruiter policies, ensure all staff understand and comply with these policies, and ensure open and accurate communication with UM students.

Recruiters seeking to use Handshake in connection with UM will:

  • Agree to and follow the Handshake Terms of Service Handshake.
  • Provide complete job descriptions, clearly indicating that you are a Third-Party Recruiter.
  • Provide the client names that the third-party recruiter is representing if asked by ELCS, and who will receive student information.
  • Not download resumes or send direct messages to students and alumni who have not applied to a specific job opening.
  • Agree that neither you nor your employer client will provide UM students' resumes or candidate information to any other party without the student's consent.
  • Follow EEO standards in the screening, recruiting, and referring of qualified applicants to employers without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, or disability.
  • Not permit outside services from bulk collecting student data, employer data, job descriptions, or other marketplace information through the use of automated scripts.
  • Not require students to create an account on a third-party platform unaffiliated with the company or brand providing the employment role.
  • Include contact information, including email address and telephone number, to provide a point of contact for UM staff and also be available on your public profile.
  • Not charge University of Montana applicants for any services rendered.
  • Provide applicants with copies of documents, including signed applications/agreements.
  • Not prohibit, restrict or penalize applicants from accepting a job directly with a client company.

Third-party recruiters are welcome to post positions and may participate in information sessions, but may not be permitted to participate in other visibility programs.
