Learn more about him in this Q&A with Prof. Anya Jabour:

Q: How and why did you choose to major in history at UM? What do you see as the value of a history degree?

A: I chose to major in history at UM because I've always been fascinated by the people, places, and events of the past and how they shape the present day. I see the value of a history degree as explaining the world around us and how to deal with it, which is integral to any path in life.

Q: What have been some of the most rewarding and/or challenging aspects of studying history at UM? Any special experiences you'd like to highlight?

A: The most rewarding and challenging aspect of studying history at UM for me was my senior research project on Chico Mendes and his impact on U.S. politics. I spent countless hours looking through old congressional documents, reading Mendes' personal papers, and visiting archives in three different states as part of the project. In the end, however, the time spent researching, writing, and editing has been one of the most rewarding experiences not only of my time at UM, but my entire life.

Q: What's next for you? How do you see history continuing to enrich your life after graduation?

A: Next year I will be pursuing a master's degree in International Relations at Tsinghua University in Beijing as a Schwarzman Scholar. History will continue to enrich my life in so many ways. Whatever career I pursue, the lessons I gained from a history education, reading, writing, and critical thinking, will be invaluable, and the curiosity fostered in me by my history education will continue to push me to explore and understand the world.

Q: Anything you'd like to add?

A: I want to thank the professors of the Department, because without them, my time as a History major would not have been as impactful.
