Personal Summary

Since joining the Center in 2009, Deena has secured more than $40 million in funding to foster globally minded leaders of integrity through Mansfield programs in democracy and international engagement. Her current focus is on bolstering democracy at home and abroad in support of high school, higher education, and broader community audiences. Deena has previously served as a diplomat, supporting the U.S. National Security Strategy and democracy at the U.S. Embassy in Indonesia. She has also worked for a Dow Jones community newspaper in Michigan and at the Institute of International Education in Washington, DC. A recipient of the UM Pantzer Presidential Humanitarian Award and the Distinguished Service to International Education Award, she also served as a UM Presidential Leadership Fellow in 2015-2016. Deena earned her MPA here at UM and a BA in international relations and economics at American University.  She has worked or studied in more than 40 countries, and has studied Indonesian, Arabic, and French. She and her husband Brian raised two children in Missoula.
