Reflections and Thanksgiving

Dear Griz Family,

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I want to share my thanks and appreciation for each of you.

I am grateful that you each support our educational mission as an expression of service to others. And I admire your efforts to foster a diverse and inclusive environment where critical thinking and civil exchange of ideas are valued by all. Like in most families, we may disagree from time to time, but at our core, we are united in our belief that the work we do at the University of Montana is worthwhile and, in fact, critical.

It’s hard to believe Thanksgiving has arrived. The semester has flown—it seems we were just starting the semester with the Convocation on the Oval where we welcomed an outstanding new class of freshmen, saw some of our best and brightest return, and set students on a course for success. Meanwhile, our research enterprise has continued to benefit not only our fellow Montanans but also those around the world. And many of us came together last month for a day of service to feed those less fortunate throughout the holiday season and beyond.

This week, many of us will travel to join family and friends for a few days of rest and gratitude. While I plan to spend time with family and friends, I also will spend time reflecting on what makes our university community so special—each of you.

Our remarkable students, our top-notch faculty and staff, and our alumni and friends all over the world make us who we are as a university. Each day, we come together to nurture a supportive learning environment. Chelsea and I give thanks for each of you and the contributions you make on and off campus. Our wish for you is a peaceful and happy Thanksgiving with family and friends.

My hope is that you all—employees and students—return replenished and energized. Let's finish this semester strong.

Enjoy your break. Be safe, and we’ll be here to welcome you home.

Seth
