Remembering 9/11

September 11, 2020

Dear UM Family,

The attacks against Americans 19 years ago on Sept. 11, 2001, and the years of overseas conflict that followed, have forced thousands of families to carry on each day incomplete due to the premature loss of a loved one.

While we reflect on those we lost, we must also give voice to the countless first responders and volunteers who rushed towards harm's way and sacrificed everything to help their fellow citizens.

Many of our students are too young to remember firsthand that awful, uncertain day. So it is our responsibility to ensure they understand the bravery, selflessness and courage that Americans showed on Sept. 11, 2001, and the weeks, months and years that followed. That is what it means to "always remember."

Within our UM family, I am energized by the commitment to serving others I see among our students, faculty and staff. Whether it is fighting wildfires, partnering with public health officials on the frontlines of this pandemic or enlisting in ROTC and the Montana National Guard, the spirit of public service is thriving on our campus. I am proud to be a Grizzly.

Thank you to all of our campus first responders, veterans and those who currently serve in the military. We are grateful for your service and sacrifice on this day and every day.

Sincerely,

Seth
