Charter Day

Dear UM Family,

This month 128 years ago, the Montana Legislature established the University of Montana.

The charge was to create a public institution to serve Montanans and provide an education in the branches of “literature, science and the arts.” From its inception, the doors of UM remain open to everyone, no matter their walk of life.

Placed on the valley floor at the base of Mount Sentinel, on the aboriginal territories of the Salish and Kalispel people, our University honors this mission more than a century later.

Today we celebrate Charter Day, affirming our commitment to provide Montanans with access to a flagship university that prioritizes academic quality, launches successful careers and provides a vibrant campus experience that is second to none.

As we reflect on our dignified 128-year legacy, there has never been a school year quite like 2020-21. Like many of our vibrant campus traditions, COVID-19 is requiring Charter Day to look a little different this year.

To celebrate this important day, visit the University Center atrium at noon for a cupcake provided by the UM Alumni Association.

Thank you again for being a part of our UM Family and for your contributions to the historical fabric of UM.
