Emeritus
Emeritus status is one of the University of Montana's highest honors for retiring faculty, recognizing a career of sustained excellence in teaching, research and creative work, and service to the institution. The award reflects the shared efforts of a faculty member's academic unit, their college, and the Office of the Provost, and culminates in formal recognition by the Montana Board of Regents (BOR).
Please note that emeritus status is an honor conferred upon a retiree. It is not associated with employee/retiree benefits or privileges. For more information about retirees' benefits and privileges, please see the Retirees' Association website.
The BOR accepts these nominations at the March, May, September, and November meetings, but they must be received several weeks in advance. (BOR meeting schedule)
To be eligible for emeritus status, a retired faculty member must have:
- been employed by the University of Montana for no less than ten years, and
- maintained a record of excellence in teaching, research/creativity, and service upon retirement.
