Outstanding Student in a Major Award
The Outstanding Student in a Major or Program distinction is an annual recognition that honors exceptional graduating students across the University of Montana. This recognition highlights students who demonstrate excellence in ways that are meaningful to their discipline, including academic achievement, leadership, service, or professional development.
Each spring, academic departments select one student from each major or program to receive this distinction. This faculty-driven approach allows departments to define excellence according to their disciplinary values and priorities.
Selected students are recognized at commencement and receive a commemorative graduation cord distributed by the University of Montana Alumni Association.
Eligibility and Selection
Departments are encouraged to select students who are graduating seniors or who graduated in the previous summer or fall terms. There is no minimum GPA requirement, and selection criteria are determined by each department. This approach provides flexibility for departments to recognize a broader range of student accomplishments while celebrating outstanding student achievement across campus.
