Gender Inclusive Housing FAQs
About Gender Inclusive Housing
What is Gender Inclusive Housing?
Gender inclusive housing is a housing option where room placement and roommate assignments are made regardless of sex or gender identity/expression. The Gender Inclusive Community is a specific wing or a floor where gender inclusive housing assignments are implemented. The one bathroom on this floor is a communal bathroom used by all residents of the floor (regardless of gender identity/expression or sex).
Why does UM Housing offer this option?
Gender inclusive housing is offered at the University of Montana in response to student requests for this type of community individually, through student groups, and from the Associated Students of the University of Montana (ASUM). This community serves the needs of a population of students without changing the structure of the remaining residence hall floors.
Where is Gender Inclusive Housing located?
The Gender Inclusive Community is located in one wing of a floor in Miller Hall.
What is expected if I live in Gender Inclusive Housing?
Students who are placed in the Gender Inclusive Community must agree to support a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all students, regardless of sexuality, gender identity/expression, or other identities.
How will students be assigned to live in this community?
Students must opt in to this community, and those who are placed here must agree to support a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all students, regardless of sexuality, gender identity/expression, or other identities. No student will be placed in this community unless they specifically request this housing option on their application or through the room change process.
How can students sign up to live in this community?
Students may request this housing option when they complete their housing application, or when they complete the appropriate waitlist option after housing assignments have been made or after they have already moved into their assignment.
How will roommates be assigned?
If a specific roommate is not requested, you will be assigned one based off of your preferences on the housing application regardless of sex or gender identity/expression. Roommates are matched using the profile questions each student submits with their housing application.
What about romantic relationships and couples living together?
UM Housing discourages those involved in romantic relationships from living together, but we do not require students to justify their roommate requests in any hall as long as both students make the request to live together. Students should keep in mind that all students living on this floor share a communal bathroom.
If I am assigned Gender Inclusive Housing and no longer want to live there, can I change?
Students can request a room change at any time through the appropriate waitlist option. Room change requests will be granted based on the availability of the options a student is requesting.
Are there other Gender Inclusive Housing options beyond the Gender Inclusive Community?
Students who have specific people they would like to live with may request an apartment at Lewis and Clark Village regardless of gender. There are also single rooms in most buildings that may meet some students’ needs. Students who need specific accommodations may contact UM Housing to discuss their options.
