Are You Ready to Test Out?
Just like wax in a hive, the Apprentice Level is the foundation for the other courses in our program. We strongly believe all beekeepers need this fundamental knowledge and skillset before progressing to higher levels.
However, experienced beekeepers may bypass the course, unlocking many other course paths, by passing our test-out exam. Just like the final exam of our Apprentice course, the test-out will determine your proficiency in a wide range of topics related to honey bee biology and beekeeping. To get a sense of what will be on the test, we recommend reviewing the Apprentice course overview and materials.
This exam is thorough, so don't be surprised - or discouraged! - if you don't pass. Luckily, you can apply the cost of the test to a future Apprentice course registration, meaning that if you fail you will still come out even.
This option will help proficient beekeepers jump in to our other offerings, but with the tradeoff that you will miss the deeply enriching experience of studying Apprentice topics in-depth, learning directly from our instructors, and engaging with a cohort of beekeepers from around the world.

Test-Out Details
- The test-out exam is available on demand, year round.
- You will have 125 minutes to complete 60 questions in a variety of formats.
- You are allowed only one attempt at the exam.
- Once you submit the exam, you will receive an automatic grade; to pass, you must score 80% or higher.
- If you do not pass, reach out to us at ExtendedLearningSupport@umontana.edu to apply the test-out fee to the registration fee of an Apprentice course.
