DBS Undergraduate Scholarships

The Division of Biological Sciences is proud to offer many departmental scholarships to support our students, thanks to the generosity of our donors. Below are the scholarships currently offered by our department.

George L. Card Memorial Scholarship

The George L. Card Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman who has declared a major in the Division of Biological Sciences (Biology, Microbiology, Neuroscience, or Medical Laboratory Science).

William Hardy Eshbaugh, III Scholarship

The William Hardy Eshbaugh, III Scholarship provides an award to a University of Montana undergraduate student in the Division of Biological Sciences.   The recipient must demonstrate outstanding scholastic achievement with a minimum GPA of 3.0. The recipient must also demonstrate financial need, as determined by the Office of Financial Aid.  Note: in order to be eligible for this award, you must file a FAFSA or Foreign Student Application for Financial Need before the scholarship application deadline.

DBS General Scholarship

To receive and award gifts designated for the Division of Biological Sciences that may not meet the minimum needed to set up separate named scholarship funds.

 

Donald M. Hetler Pre-Med Scholarship

The Donald M. Hetler Pre-Med Scholarship will be awarded to students who are enrolled in the Pre-Medical Sciences Program in the Division of Biological Sciences at The University of Montana. Preference shall be given to Montana residents who graduated from a Montana high school and who have financial needs as determined by the Office of Financial Aid need-analysis. Additionally, preference will be given to students who intend to continue their education in the field of medicine by applying to medical school as demonstrated by their grade point average, statements or actions. Recipients must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.

 

W.K. Kellogg Foundation Scholarship

W.K. Kellogg Foundation Scholarship is for academic achievement. It will be given to deserving University of Montana students majoring in Medical Laboratory Science, and who will be enrolled at the UM during the Autumn semester (on-campus or registered for their internship).  Applicants must currently have junior status and a cumulative GPA of 3.0. 

 

Bill Morrelles Memorial Scholarship

The Bill Morrelles Memorial Scholarship provides an annual award to a deserving student majoring in biology with an emphasis in zoological sciences.

Morris B. Myerowitz Memorial Scholarship

The Morris B. Myerowitz Memorial Scholarship provides an annual award to a deserving student at The University of Montana who is majoring in biology. The recipient must have shown the greatest promise for a bright future. Preference will be given to students who are interested in teaching and/or field research and are committed to a better understanding of and improvement of the health and welfare of wildlife.

 

John S. O'Dell Scholarship

The John S. O'Dell Scholarship provides an annual award to a student majoring in the biological sciences at The University of Montana, including zoology, botany, and microbiology. The student must be a full-time student either undergraduate or graduate and have demonstrated academic achievement, good leadership qualities and involvement in extra-curricular activities. Financial need may be considered.

 

Sam and Nelly Maclay Award

The Fund provides an annual award for a student who shows unusual promise in journalism, chemistry, or the Division of Biological Sciences.  This award is rotated year to year among these three majors. (DBS will offer this scholarship in spring 2023.)

Apply for DBS Scholarships

Applications for the Division of Biological Sciences scholarships are due in March of each year, with funds awarded in the fall of the following year.  In order to apply for any of the DBS scholarships, log into the UM Scholarship Portal and complete the general application.  If you qualify for any of the DBS scholarships, you will be notified through the Portal.

For all scholarships (with exceptions listed), applicants must:

  • Currently have Biology, Microbiology, Neuroscience, or Medical Laboratory Science as their declared major (as appropriate to individual scholarship)
  • Have a Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 or higher (depending on the scholarship)
  • Attend UM during the following Autumn semester (scholarship will be applied during this semester)
  • For the William Hardy Eshbaugh, III Scholarship only:  Have filed the FAFSA or for international students: go to the Office of Foreign Students and fill out a Foreign Student Application for Financial Need by the scholarship due date to demonstrate financial need 
  • Completed the required essay in the Scholarship Portal (it is fine to copy and paste the same essay for each of the DBS scholarships for which you qualify).
  • Submit a letter of recommendation (see below).

All DBS scholarships recommend but do not require a letter of recommendation from UM faculty member, (preferably a DBS faculty member), submitted through the Scholarship Portal. Due dates will be provided through the Portal and the DBS student email list, so check your UM email regularly.
