Request for Statement of Interest: Cook Inlet Beluga Whale (CIBW) Prey, Salmon Productivity Monitoring at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER)
The purpose of this project is to characterize the prey species composition in JBER waters that serve as critical foraging habitat for the endangered Cook Inlet Beluga Whale (CIBW). The data collected will: (a) inform JBER’s environmental management decisions regarding Beluga habitat quality, (b) support compliance with the Endangered Species Act (ESA), (c) contribute to understanding of prey availability as a limiting factor in CIBW population recovery, and (d) support collaborative regional eDNA monitoring efforts.
Estimated Available Funding: $167,897. Statements of Interest (SOI) are due by Noon Central Time, on 10 Sep 2026, with questions or clarifications due no later than COB on 21 August 2026.
Request for Statement of Interest: Habitat-Based Management Framework for Brown Treesnake (Boiga Irregularis) Control and Native Species Recovery, Joint Region Marianas
The invasive brown treesnake (Boiga irregularis; BTS) has inflicted catastrophic damage on Guam's native ecosystem, causing the widespread extinction and extirpation of native bird and reptile species. This ecological crisis poses a significant threat to neighboring islands and creates substantial challenges for the U.S. Department of Navy’s (DoN) mission in the Joint Region Marianas (JRM) area of responsibility (AOR) by imposing costly conservation and interdiction requirements. Although programs exist to manage the snake population, they have not been implemented within a strategic, habitat-based framework. By integrating new site-specific control methods with a broader habitat management approach, the goal is to more efficiently suppress the snake population, foster the recovery of native species, and support the long-term sustainability of the JRM's conservation and mission-related objectives.
Estimated Available Funding: $570,006. The Government is extending the proposal deadline to 24 August 2026 at 4:00pm (ChST). The deadline for questions is also being extended to 14 August 2026 at 10:00am (ChST).
Joint Fire Science Program FY2027 Notice of Funding Opportunity
The Joint Fire Science Program (JFSP) has released its FY2027 Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to support research and science delivery projects addressing emerging and long-term challenges in wildland fire management. Funding opportunities are available for projects focused on improving understanding of changing wildfire regimes, wildfire impacts, and the application of science to support fire management decisions.
Primary Research: Supports research examining the drivers and consequences of changing wildfire patterns, as well as smoke impacts from prescribed fire and wildfire.
Fire Leaders and Managers, Emerging Scientists (FLAMES) Award: This new opportunity supports current master’s and doctoral students at U.S. colleges and universities conducting research related to wildland fire or associated physical, biological, and social sciences. The program aims to strengthen connections between scientific research and fire management operations through experiential learning opportunities and exposure to real-world fire management practices.
Funding Opportunity: JFSP FY2027 Notice of Funding Opportunity
Deadline: September 17, 2026
Additional information, including eligibility requirements, proposal instructions, and application materials, is available through the Joint Fire Science Program website.
Wilderness Stewardship E-Courses
Wilderness e-courses are available for free through the Wilderness Institute at the University of Montana! These courses cover foundational and specialized topics in wilderness stewardship and management, providing training for federal employee, agency partners, and the public.
Online Fire Trainings hosted by the University of Idaho
The Student of Fire Initiative at the University of Idaho is offering four courses this fall: S-290, M-410, RX-310, and S-215. All courses are administered online through the Wildland Fire Learning Portal. If you are interested in setting up a special session for any of these courses, or requesting the development of other courses, you can reach out to the Student of Fire Initiative at studentoffire@uidaho.edu.
