Requesting ASL Interpreting Services
This guide explains how to request an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter for deaf students, employees, or visitors.
When you may need an interpreter
Request an interpreter any time clear communication matters. Here are common situations.
Example 1: Meeting with a deaf student. You want to meet with a deaf student during office hours. You are not sure if the student brings an interpreter.
Example 2: A department meeting. Your department expects a deaf applicant, colleague, or guest at a faculty meeting. You want an interpreter available just in case. Submit a request ahead of time to be prepared.
Example 3: Public events. Your department is hosting a lecture, workshop, or open forum. Request an interpreter if deaf attendees may be present.
When to submit your request
Submit requests early. Interpreters are scheduled in advance, and availability is limited.
