Jim "Slim" Lyon, Electrician, Facilities Services

“Jim acts as a mentor to everyone in the electrical shop. We all rely heavily on him, but he will be retiring in the next two years. He has made it his mission every day to share his vast knowledge of this campus and the electrical trade."
What’s your favorite part about working at UM?
My favorite part of working in UM facilities is being able to be a cog in the machine that keeps the campus running for the students. We fix things to keep classrooms and offices running.
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
My supervisors and fellow workers inspire me to work efficiently to help them do their tasks and figure out the problems together. Facilities runs on teamwork. None of us would succeed at keeping this campus running without help from others.
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
My favorite tradition is the Griz/Bobcat game, of course. I've never seen one in person, but I love the rivalry.
What's your favorite spot on campus?
I would have to say the stadium Canyon Club is my favorite spot on campus. I've always enjoyed the view when I get the privilege of working up there. Most of the other places I have to work are utility rooms!
Amanda Wikoff, Proposal Development Analyst, Research Administration

She has quickly figured out the most expedient order of operations and bottom lines for ensuring timely approvals and routing. She works with the PIs rather than creating any additional back and forth that detracts from the goal of preparing competitive research proposals. Amanda is consistently professional and an asset to the UM awards team."
What’s your favorite part about working at UM?
I love to experience the seasons on campus, both through the beautiful plant life cultivated by the ground crew and the ebbs and flows of energy as students embark on their educational journeys here. Each season brings something so delightful and just in time, whether it's the buzz of students returning to campus or the quiet peace of winter and summer breaks!
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
Our researchers and creative scholars! Their passion about their work is an evergreen inspiration and it's a delight to enable their work through my own. I'm pleased to serve as a guide through the confusing landscape of funding rules and regulations so PIs can focus more energy on their own areas of expertise!
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
I am consistently astonished and deeply proud of the UM community's generosity during the "Can the Cats" food drive each year! Any win is exciting, but one based on care for our neighbors is particularly sweet.
What's your favorite spot on campus?
Anywhere with excellent and interesting plants!

Betsy Muehlhausen, Registered Medical Assistant, Curry Health Center

As a medical assistant, she helps students feel comfortable and cared for, and her humor and warmth make CHC a brighter, more welcoming place. Betsy is a true go-getter, always showing dedication to students’ health and well-being, and her commitment makes her an invaluable part of the University of Montana community."
What’s your favorite part about working at UM?
My favorite part of working at UM is witnessing our students grow and prepare for the next chapter in their lives. Students come to us from all ages and walks of life, but the pride that comes with their accomplishments is the same regardless of age or background. I really enjoy being a small part of their journey, whether that be a celebratory hug, a corny joke when some levity seems right or a few words of encouragement when things are a little rough. Every day is unique in my work and I love that.
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
My inspiration to do well at work comes from a few different directions. First, I want to do my best for the students who may be going through a real struggle while navigating healthcare, sometimes for the first time on their own. Seeing the relief and gratitude of a student who feels heard and cared for is very rewarding. Secondly, I work with a very compassionate, qualified and professional group of people at Curry. My job is to support our providers in caring for our students and I hope to only have a positive impact in that role. I want to do well for the team! Lastly, I am inspired to give the best student care I can because of “Doc” Curry, who spent decades of his career building our clinic into what it is today. I can still hear him say, “Take care of the student. They’re the reason we’re here.” I don’t want to disappoint our namesake.
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
My favorite UM tradition, hands down, is spring graduation. You can feel the entire campus exhale as the last assignments and projects are turned in and that last final has been taken. UM groundskeepers always do a spectacular job grooming our campus into perfection just in time for families to arrive. The flowering trees are blooming in every shade of pink and the whole campus is magical. Truly my favorite.
What's your favorite spot on campus?
My favorite spot on campus is anywhere I can look out and see how this campus is so fortunate to have this abundance of natural beauty all around us. I love looking at the sun reflecting off Snowbowl on my way into work in the morning and I feel so lucky to get to go for a walk on my lunch hour and enjoy the trail along the Clark Fork or the switchbacks to the "M". If I happen to catch a carillon tune on The Oval, then THAT is my favorite place to be. What a special and unique campus we have!

What’s your favorite part about working at UM?
Getting to learn alongside students as they discover what matters to them and how they want to be part of their communities. I get to watch them step into new spaces, grapple with complex issues, and begin to see themselves as people who can make a difference. Being a small part of how they figure out where they belong in the world is really meaningful to me.
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
I’m inspired by the people in our Missoula community. Our nonprofits and neighbors take care of each other when systems fall short and make our community stronger and more resilient to challenges. Being able to bring students into that work and help them find their place in it is such a gift.
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
Can the Cats. There’s a lot of energy and pride, but also a shared sense of purpose. I’ve gotten to be part of Stuff the Bus, and what stands out to me is how much good can happen in just a few hours - students engaging in the community, neighbors giving what they can, and all of it adding up to a staggering weight of support for each other during a season when we’re most hungry for it. It’s a tradition that reflects how much this campus cares about this place and each other.
What's your favorite spot on campus?
The river. It runs right through campus and connects us to the rest of Missoula. You see students, staff, faculty, and community members all using that space in different ways. It’s a good reminder that the university is part of the community, not separate from it.
February 2026 Award Recipients
Caitlin Byers, Frontier Learning Lab Director, Montana Digital Academy

“Caitlin has taken on the launch and rollout of the Frontier Learning Lab that is designed to introduce, teach, and learn with educators and students around the state with A.I. Mixed Reality and more. Her dedication and exceptional efforts have allowed educators and students around the state of Montana to have access and a reliable resource for learning about emerging educational technology. All of the staff at Montana Digital Academy are extremely grateful and proud of the work she is doing for our state's students, educators, and communities."
What’s your favorite part about working at UM?
The reach. The Frontier Learning Lab at Montana Digital Academy is graciously hosted in the Phyllis J. Washington College of Education, but our work has the potential to touch every corner of Montana — rural communities, tribal schools, districts where it might be harder to get people to show up and say, "let's figure this out together." There's something special about being part of an institution with the credibility and infrastructure of UM while doing work that's genuinely grassroots. It means the resources we build actually get to the people who need them most.
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
The educators I work with — both within our organization and in schools across the state. Our team brings such depth and breadth of experience that there's always someone to think out loud with or test an idea on. And then there's nothing quite like spending a day in a small-town school library leading a workshop, and having a teacher come up afterward — someone who's been doing this for 20 years — and say, "Okay, I think I can try this." That moment never gets old. (And yes, I wrote with an em-dash before AI-generated text was a thing, and will continue to do so even if it makes my writing look a little suspicious.)
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
I'm a sucker for first-day-of-school energy, so the start of the academic year is always energizing. There's a collective "Okay, let's do this" feeling that settles over campus — everyone a little optimistic about what's ahead. It's a good reminder that somewhere in Montana, a teacher is starting the year a little more ready to bring something new into their classroom.
What's your favorite spot on campus?
The Oval on a day when the weather cooperates. There's nowhere quite like it when the mountains and sun are out and everyone slows down for a minute. It's the kind of place that makes you remember you're lucky to be here. It's also been a meaningful touchpoint to walk the same path at different stages of my life — as a visiting high school student, an undergrad, a graduate student, and now in my career.
Lucas Whitcher, Assistant Professor of Human Anatomy & Physiology and Co-Founder of The Legacy Project, Missoula College

“Lucas is a gift and an inspiration to his community, discipline, colleagues, and students. Beyond the excellence that he brings to his students in the classroom, Lucas fosters goodwill while engaging UM Spectrum community, Missoula Bone & Joint surgeons & their times, and interdisciplinary synergy piloting the University of Montana Anatomical Dissection Center along with his Legacy Project Cadaverical gross & histological anatomical image banks. His leadership role empowers our A&P instructional team from professors to Teaching Assistants. Lucas builds consensus-based networks with his mentoring MC instructors between River & Bitterroot campuses, as well as high school instructors from participating Dual Credit high schools."
What’s your favorite part about working at UM?
My favorite part about working at the University of Montana are ALL of the individuals that I get to interact with. This includes everyone within the campus community; the students, faculty colleagues both within department and across departments/campuses, as well as all of the wonderful staff that support the myriad of functions that a campus community must perform.
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
The students provide the “drive” I need to do my best, and I am incredibly thankful for them. They are the reason we are all here, and their desire, excitement, and intrigue to learn generates a truly wonderful community of learners. Being a part of the community, I get to witness the personal and academic growths, the unfolding career paths, and the empowerments that are gained within the students. Not only is this my inspiration to be better, but their advancement is the most rewarding element I take away from the overall experience.
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
My favorite tradition is probably the pumpkin on the spire in Main Hall. I remember when I first noticed that as a former undergraduate student here. I wondered how it would get there every October, and it was stimulating to think about the possibilities. Maybe paragliders taking flight off of Mount Sentinel were able to drop a pumpkin with such force and precision as to impale it? Or maybe the UM President has a really cool catapult set up on the Oval at night when nobody’s looking, and after hundreds of practice rounds is finally able to “land one”? Maybe, I thought, it could even be a qualifying event for the starting quarterback position on the football team. I think the suspense in not knowing is what makes it so cool to me.
What's your favorite spot on campus?
There are so many beautiful places throughout our campus, and many of them have important connections and memories for me and my time here, so it’s difficult to pick just one. But the Missoula College River Campus has such a beautiful showcasing and parallel above the river. Plus, there are dogs across the river and so many beautiful waterfowl and birds of prey. Lastly, existing now on both sides of the river, our UM campus can more accurately say, “A River Runs Through It”. We just need a walking bridge now to connect.
January 2026 Award Recipients
Sue Ostertag, Clinical Associate Professor and Co-Chair/Director of Clinical Education, School of Physical Therapy

"Dr. Sue Ostertag enthusiastically stepped up to the plate to support her friend and colleague, Dr. Ryan Mizner as Co-Chair of the program. Sue has an open-door policy and encourages countless hours of conversations with faculty, staff and the Dean's Office to ensure that our community has the best support possible offered to them. Not to mention, Sue has also served as Director of Clinical Education and ensured that the methods and processes are seamless, easily navigated, and centered around student success. Having Dr. Ostertag as Co-Chair has changed the department, college, and program for the better."
What’s your favorite part about working at UM?
I love having the opportunity to work with our Doctor of Physical Therapy students over the 33 months that they are with us at the School of Physical Therapy, and being a part of their "journey" as the learn and grow as UM grad students and soon-to-be health care professionals. Whether I am teaching in a traditional classroom environment or one of our lab courses, precepting in our PT clinic, or working with them throughout their clinical education experiences, I enjoy getting to know each and every one and being a part of the process that prepares them to work with their future patients and be effective interprofessional team members. While it is always hard to say goodbye after graduation, I take solace in knowing that we have another incoming cohort of compassionate and motivated students eager to join UMPT and the UM community in the fall.
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
Everyone! Over the 20+ years that I have been at UM, I have been continually inspired and challenged by the staff, faculty, and students that I have worked with to improve all that we do at UMPT and on campus. Be it in class, working with my colleagues on any number of committees or in the PT Clinic, or helping Dr. Mizner with the day-to-day leadership of the UMPT School, I am always inspired by my colleagues and students to be the best version of myself.
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
Although it is not a tradition for everyone at UM, the UM School of Physical Therapy Spring Banquet is my favorite tradition. This annual event is held the week before graduation and is an opportunity for all of our students and their family and friends to celebrate their accomplishments and hard work with our PT faculty, staff, and guests. The evening is full of great conversations, story telling, and laughter, and I enjoy the opportunity to meet the many people behind the scenes supporting our students. I vividly remember this event when I was a student at UM, and am thrilled that this tradition continues to this day.
What's your favorite spot on campus?
The Clark Fork foot bridge has a lot of memories and meaning to me. I so enjoy the walk across the bridge any time of day both to and from campus, anticipating what is ahead or reflecting on the day as it is wrapping up. Whether it is a quiet week day or a busy Saturday football day, the walk across that bridge and the view of Mt Sentinel, campus, and the river never disappoints.
Devin Hayes, Senior Web Engineer, Web Technology Services

"Devin Hayes has made an extraordinary impact on UM's web presence through initiative and technical excellence. He spearheaded an SEO optimization project that moved umt.edu from the third page of Google search results to page one. He led accessibility remediation that reduced site failures from 630,000 to 25,000. Devin has taken on the technical lead role for a new Generative Engine Optimization initiative, positioning UM ahead of peer institutions. He also drives critical technical debt reduction and collaborates across teams to support custom application development."
What’s your favorite part about working at UM?
It's difficult to pinpoint a single favorite part of working at UM, but I would have to say it's the commitment to doing the best work possible that I see across departments. Everyone shares a common goal, which I think is tied to the strong sense of community here at UM. And that shared purpose helps strengthen the community even further. It's inspiring and rewarding to put your best efforts forward to contribute to our common goals.
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
That would have been my mother. She fostered my curiosity, supported all of my weird hobbies, worked tirelessly, and never gave up on anything. My ethics in life and work are almost entirely due to her influence. The community and commitment I've witnessed across departments here at UM is also very inspiring. The passion for the work is contagious.
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
I'm still relatively new here, but when I visited last fall, I had my mind set on hiking up the M Trail. Unfortunately, I came down with a bug on day 2 and it had to be postponed. Next time, though!
What's your favorite spot on campus?
My favorite spot has to be the Oval. It's in the heart of the University and offers the best vantage point to take in the architecture, the hills, the trees, and lie down to watch the clouds go by.

Adam C. Carroll, Presentation Equipment/Production Specialist, IT

What’s your favorite part about working at UM?
I am fortunate in my role to be able to interact with a variety of people and help them with technology. I love meeting new people, and I love my coworkers.
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
The students, and everyone who supports the students and the mission here. My goal is to do my best to help them achieve their goals.
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
Commencement. That’s what it’s all about.
What's your favorite spot on campus?
The Mansfield Library. It has many great spaces, and of course, all the books. I used to work in the Social Science building, and I would come over to the Library every day on my lunch break to browse the stacks and grab an interesting book and sit and read for a while. Sometimes with my eyes closed.
Marissa Badzioch, Program Coordinator, School of Visual and Media Arts

What’s your favorite part about working at UM?
I love working here and getting to play a small role in helping our students learn what they are interested in! I love being in a support role that gets to work directly with students who are here to decide what makes them happy.
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
The students inspire me to do my best. And our amazing faculty! I am surrounded by creativity and exciting ideas!
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
Personally, I am partial to the Ceramics Pottery Sale that the ASUM group SCUM puts on each winter. I love gifting handmade ceramics and sculptures to my family and friends.
What's your favorite spot on campus?
Being a Missoula native, I have spent time on our campus my whole life. I grew up dancing in the dance studios in PARTV, and I will always love those spaces. But I love so many places on campus: walking around the arboretum, the third floor fine arts building library, the little tiny booths by the fish in the UC. Oh! And The Art Annex! I love a building that houses a pool and art. 🙂

Jeanie Castillo, Senior Instructional Designer, LEAD

Jeanie is consistently willing to help with any random Canvas project or initiative. She has been instrumental in transitioning Extended Credit and Noncredit programs from Moodle to Canvas, as well as guiding our team members, instructors, and learners in best practices for using Canvas. Jeanie has also worked hard to develop the utilization, taxonomy, and deployment of digital badges in Canvas Credentials. She also has office hours where she directly helps instructors with developing and utilizing their Canvas shells. Finally, beyond her incredible work in Instructional Design, Jeanie is a wonderful colleague and team member. She keeps us smiling with her pranks, funny memes, and jigsaw puzzle challenges.
What’s your favorite part about working at UM?
There’s a lot to love about working here, but if I had to pick one, it’s that I can leave my office during my lunch break and take a walk along the river or hike the M. It doesn’t take much to get out in nature, get some exercise, and clear my thoughts.
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
I feel lucky to work with amazing people here on campus, but I am really pushed to do my best by the wonderful, hard-working, dedicated faculty at UM. Faculty contribute in so many meaningful ways—teaching, research, service, leadership, advising, scholarship and more—and I want to support them as much as I can. My goal is to help faculty use the Canvas LMS to create digital learning spaces and materials that truly work for them. If I can make their jobs even a little easier, they can focus more fully on what matters most: teaching and mentoring their students.
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
My favorite UM tradition is the Hello Walk. It makes me smile to see all the ways we can say “hello” to each other.
What's your favorite spot on campus?
My favorite spot on campus is the garden around the Natural Sciences Annex.

What’s your favorite part about working at UM?
My favorite part about working at UM is the never-ending opportunities to learn and grow, as well as UM's amazing community. I feel so fortunate to work with such an incredible and supportive team, and I've learned so much since starting in this role! I get to be a part of and organize some phenomenal (and fun!) programs, and I often find myself reflecting on how lucky I am to be involved in their development and implementation. There are many moments when I have to pinch myself because, what do you mean I get to do this for work?!
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
My team and the UM community inspire me to do my best at work! I am fortunate to work with some incredibly talented, kind, and knowledgeable teammates who inspire me to learn, grow, and improve every single day. I'm also grateful to have the opportunity to meet and serve people from all across campus; through collaboration and planning events, I've made some unexpected and wonderful connections!
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
The pumpkin!
What's your favorite spot on campus?
My favorite spot on campus is the area behind the Davidson Honors College Building/the stretch of sidewalk between the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library and the Forestry Building. I love walking through the tunnel of trees, especially during the summer when the cicadas are out and in the fall when the leaves have changed. I used to walk my dogs on campus, and this particular spot was one of their favorites, where they'd frolic through piles of leaves and (attempt to) chase squirrels.

Kendall Kihn, Operations and Compliance Manager, Graduate School

As the director of a graduate program, I interface with Kendall regularly--she is an incredible asset to UM! Her ability to adhere to policies and procedures while also implementing innovative solutions is impressive. I know that whenever our program needs to call upon the Graduate School for institutional knowledge, to assist a student, or for any other reason, Kendall is there. I greatly value her work ethic and her commitment to excellence.
What’s your favorite part about working at UM?
My favorite part about working at UM is the opportunity to support our graduate students. At the graduate level, we interact with students from a wide range of backgrounds, each at a different stage in their personal and professional journey, yet all striving toward the common goal of academic and career growth. It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of that process—to help students navigate challenges, celebrate their accomplishments, and provide guidance when life’s obstacles arise. I take pride in knowing that even small efforts to make their path smoother can have a lasting impact on their success and overall experience at UM.
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
I’m inspired every day by our graduate students and by my colleagues across the UM campus who are dedicated to supporting them. When a graduate student reaches my desk, it’s often because something isn’t going as planned—they’re facing an obstacle, uncertainty, or frustration. In those moments, I’m motivated to give my very best. I take pride in listening carefully to their concerns, understanding their unique circumstances, and then researching and collaborating to find the most effective solution. Seeing a student leave my office with renewed confidence and a clear path forward reminds me why the work we do matters. My colleagues’ shared commitment to student success also drives me to continue improving processes and providing the highest level of support possible.
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
My favorite UM tradition is seeing the pumpkin perched on the tip of Main Hall each fall. It’s such a simple yet magical sight that signals the change of seasons on campus. The appearance of the pumpkin marks not only the drop in temperature but also the transformation of the Oval—when the trees burst into vibrant shades of gold, orange, and red. There’s something nostalgic and unifying about it; students, staff, and alumni all pause to look up and smile, sharing in a moment that’s uniquely UM. It’s a quiet reminder of the character and community spirit that make this campus so special.
What's your favorite spot on campus?
The Gallagher Business Building will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s where my journey at UM truly began—as a student worker finding my path, building lifelong friendships, and forming mentorships that continue to guide me today. That building was more than just a place to study and work part-time; it became a backdrop for so many meaningful moments in my life. I spent countless hours there learning, growing, and developing into the person and leader I am today. It’s also where I planned major life milestones, like my wedding, and even watched my son grow up surrounded by the energy and warmth of the UM community. Every time I walk through those doors, I’m reminded of how much that space shaped both my professional journey and my personal story.
Isabella Maag, Research Technician & Lab Manager, Piggott Lab

Bella is a key component when it comes to teaching, motivating, and keeping students in this program - from undergraduate freshmen to graduate students. She creates an environment in the Piggott lab that is both safe and inviting, while also pushing students to do quality work. When we think of large Universities and the people who make them special, I think someone in this position might go unnoticed. The truth is, people like Bella are one of the reasons we have (and continue to gain) such amazing students.
What’s your favorite part about working at UM?
I enjoy the community that is offered at UM. By working here, I am continuously being introduced to new colleagues, students and friends. The people I have met in the Piggott lab, past and present, feel like my second family. We even call Dr. Piggott, our “lab mom”, as she cares about our work but also cares about us as individuals. Having such a supportive work community is rare, and I do not take it for granted.
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
The undergraduates I mentor inspire me the most. A job like mine is unique and sometimes I forget how cool it is that I dissect fruit fly brains and run experiments. They bring a youthful “ready to learn” presence to the lab that makes me excited to teach them and continue to contribute to the science community.
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
Honestly, the pumpkin. Every year I see that some sneaky and talented folks have made their way to the top of University Hall to plop a bright orange gourd at the top. It brings fun Halloween/fall vibes to campus. My favorite part is that it stays there all year, it appears out of nowhere and hangs around with us until next fall.
What's your favorite spot on campus?
The Piggott Lab of course! I started my scientific journey as one of Dr. Piggott’s first undergraduates and I was lucky enough to stay after graduating in 2021 to continue working here. I love being in the lab, especially when each lab bench is full of students practicing with the flies or actively doing experiments. I love to chat with everyone, whether it be about science, books we’ve read, shows we’re streaming, etc. Being surrounded by like-minded people every day is a joy!

Devin Carpenter, Director for New Student Success, Student Affairs & Enrollment Management

Leading our Big Sky Experience, Devin shows an incredible eye for detail, an ability to lead and support others, and to carry out one of the campus's largest programs with near perfection. You see his efforts reflected in the smiles of students and their families during the first couple of days on campus. What’s your favorite part about working at UM?
I’ve been at UM for about 10 years now, and I’ve seen the campus go through some really challenging times. But honestly, those challenges sparked so much creativity and innovation across the board. That mindset stuck, and now it feels like part of who we are. I love working in a place where wild ideas are encouraged and actually taken seriously. And of course, I get to work alongside some incredible colleagues, people who care deeply about students and are always pushing to find better ways to support their success.
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
That’s an easy one - the UM Advocates. They’re hands down my biggest source of inspiration. Watching them grow from nervous first-years into confident, capable, and compassionate leaders is just the best part of my job. They remind me every single day why this work matters, and inspire me to be the best version of myself for them and for all of our students.
What’s your favorite UM tradition and favorite spot on campus?
My favorite UM tradition and my favorite spot on campus are actually the same — the Hello Walk! I look forward to helping the Advocates with it every year during Homecoming. There’s just something really special about seeing students share greetings from their own languages and communities. It creates such a warm, welcoming environment and reminds everyone, students, visitors, alumni, that they belong here. Plus, who doesn’t love a little bit of superstition when spooky season rolls around in October??

Becky always goes above and beyond to help with all of my grant budget support needs. The grants I work on have quite a few stipends that have to be paid out to different people and entities. She is always on top of all the paperwork and timing it takes to manage this. I greatly appreciate all of her work on the grants the OHRP oversees.
What’s your favorite part about working at UM?
I enjoy learning about all the different projects that people are working on across campus. There is a large variety of interesting research and teaching projects that are all working for the betterment of our communities.
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
My colleagues, both those that I am working with directly and the many colleagues across campus who show up every day and put in their best effort.
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
Perhaps it’s recency bias, but I do enjoy watching the pumpkin appear on the top of Main Hall each October and the lore around how it gets up there. I also really enjoy the festive lighted trees around the oval each winter, it brings a bit of whimsy to what can be a dreary season.
What's your favorite spot on campus?
We really have a beautiful campus, shout out to the hard-working grounds crew who keep it looking great! I like walking around the oval, running into people from across campus and seeing the students playing games, studying, socializing, etc. The peony garden is also an amazing spot in the spring when the peonies are in bloom. There is a magnolia tree behind Main Hall that I am fascinated with, it is so pretty when it blooms!

What’s your favorite part about working at UM?
I have many favorite parts about working at UM: the people, the atmosphere and tradition, and the constant evolution of technology and challenges. Together, they make sure there’s never a boring day here.
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
The colleagues I work most closely with inspire me. They’re top-notch, talented, and genuinely good people. They deserve the best from me in return. And, ultimately, all the work we do as a team is inspired by the students, staff, and faculty we serve.
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
Since childhood in Helena—through high school with friends who went on to play here—my favorite UM tradition has always been Griz Football season. Whether I’m in the stadium or at home grilling with the game on TV, football season here is always one of my favorite times of year.
What's your favorite spot on campus?
My favorite spot on campus is the Social Sciences building. It's where I got my start here in IT.

My favorite part of working at UM is all the different people I get to work with on a daily basis. I’m fortunate to be in a position that meets and works with nearly every department at the University eventually and every day brings new challenges and new experiences.
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
I remember that all the work we do is for our students. Even when I’m not working directly with a student I’m still helping someone else who does work with students, and I remember that the work I do will have an impact on our students, either directly or indirectly.
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
I love the annual Can the Cats food drive. I love how we’ve taken that rivalry and used it to create an event that directly helps some of the most vulnerable people in both communities.

When I was informed by my other University (University of Lethbridge, Canada) that it was not eligible to receive a grant I was going to submit there only two days before its due date, after spending weeks preparing this grant for submission, I submitted the grant at UM instead. Johanna immediately sprang into action. She helped me with a revised budget, completed all the reviews, and mobilized all other necessary units on campus to help me getting this grant submitted with 1 hour to spare! She responded to my texts after 6:30 p.m. and before 7 am to make sure everything would work smoothly. Johanna went above and beyond to help me. Her dedication to helping secure research funds for UM is commendable!
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
In the same vein, my favorite UM tradition is the annual Employee Celebration Breakfast during the UM Week of Excellence. We get to celebrate our colleagues, as well as be celebrated ourselves. We all are very important individuals whose daily efforts make this ship sail. And they serve bacon
What’s your favorite part about working at UM?
My favorite part about working at UM is my wonderful teammates and colleagues. I have gotten to know so many amazing, knowledgeable, and kind people in various roles and positions in the 10 years I have worked on campus. They are always there to support me, to bounce ideas off them, to problem solve, and to commiserate or have a laugh with. Go Team!
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
The same supportive people I mentioned before. Their collegiality, willingness to share tools and information, and their desire to do things right inspires me to do my best work, to help others when I can, and to continue improving myself.

My favorite thing about UM is the people. We truly have some of the most incredible people around. Whether it be employees or students, seasoned or new to campus, I am fortunate that I have the opportunity to work with a variety of people in areas. Favorite part about working at UM
I attended school at UM (in 1989) and then went on to work in the athletic department and then the computer science department. I really value the friendships I have made here at UM (teammates, players, coworkers, students).
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
The students! I care about helping students succeed, and that drives me to give my best. Computer Science is a challenging major. Every student comes into the program with a different background and level of experience. I am always trying to think of new ways to help students learn the material and make sure they are ready for the next class. Watching a student’s growth over time in their computer science skills and confidence is the most fulfilling part of my work.
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
The homecoming parade! It brings the entire campus and community together. Over the years I have always looked forward to attending the parade with my husband and children, my parents, my siblings – at all ages. Everyone comes out to celebrate and have a good time.

Favorite part about working at UM
My favorite part about working at UM is building rapport with students and helping them navigate the challenges that come with attending college. I also love working with the UM Housing Community Directors and Area Coordinators and being part of their career journeys. It is very meaningful work to be able to support students and staff as they build their confidence, skill sets, and work toward their future goals.
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
I continue to be inspired by my dad, Gary McCormick, and his outlook on both life and the connections we make with others. Gary always encouraged me to put my best foot forward in my work and instilled in me that there is never a triumph too small to celebrate and that it is always a valuable use of time to cheer for those around you. Working with students and staff, I try to think of the advice and support that he brought forth throughout my life, and do my best to pay it forward to the people I have the privilege to connect with on a daily basis.
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
My favorite UM tradition would have to be the UM Housing Hall Brawls! Hall Brawls are student-planned events for all residence hall residents to come together for an evening of fun, food, games, and socializing. It is always so much fun to see what the students come up with for their Hall Brawl theme, and the events are nothing short of amazing! It is great to see the students gather and meet new people, all while building pride for their residence hall.

Favorite part about working at UM
My favorite part of working at Missoula College is meeting the new students each semester and guiding and supporting them through their academic pathways. At this stage, students are often discovering their passions, shaping their futures, and figuring out the direction they want to take in life. It feels really fulfilling to be part of that process, helping them navigate their challenges, connecting them with necessary resources, and helping them make informed decisions that set them up for success. The variety of students I get to work with, each with their own unique goals and stories, really keeps things dynamic and engaging.
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
I am inspired by my students and their success. Watching students complete the Health Professions programs I advise for and become professionals in their respective fields fills me with a deep sense of pride and fulfillment. It’s amazing to see how much they’ve grown and the dedication they put into achieving their goals. Every time I hear about their accomplishments—whether they’re landing their first job, passing licensure exams, or making a positive impact in the healthcare industry—it reminds me why I enjoy my job. The connections I’ve built with these students and witnessing their journey from students to professionals is a powerful motivator that drives me to continue doing what I do.
Also, the Student Success team at Missoula College is truly an amazing group of people to work with. They inspire me to become the best I can be every day.
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
My favorite tradition is Montana Grizzly Football. I have been a long time season ticket holder and love the tradition of the players making the walk to the stadium, the band making their way around the stadium stopping outside the north end zone playing the school song, raising of the number 37 flag by a former Griz great, pizza with the President for the student section just after halftime, and at the end of the game the players making their way to the north end zone to sing “Up with Montana Boys” after a victory. People travel all over the country each weekend for Griz football and I continue to be amazed by the loyalty of the Montana Griz family and fans.

Favorite part about working at UM
My favorite part would have to be interacting with our fellow faculty and staff on a day to day basis. While our main goal is to have safe, clean and usable facilities for students, faculty and staff who interact daily with students benefit from great facilities too.
I like knowing we have helped ensure the process of learning at UM can proceed by helping fellow faculty and staff with their office, classroom or building needs. The sense of accomplishment Facilities crews find in their jobs is motivating.
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
The employees that on our crews. The collaboration of our new employees who are enthusiastic about their work along with our experienced crew members. The day to day interaction is amazing to see the willingness to learn on both sides. This along with the work ethic and “can do” attitude make Facilities Services a great work environment.
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
My favorite tradition is a combination of the Brawl of the Wild Game and the #37 Jersey for football. I moved to Missoula as a kid with my family in 1980. I did not really watch any UM games until my brother went to school here in the 1990s. I became a fan in the student section. I am amazed at how Missoula with such a diverse background has a fan base that is united as one. Some of the best games I have watched are Brawl of the Wild games. The attitude and toughness of not only #37 but the team as a whole really helped me feel connected to the University when I started working here in 2009.

My favorite part about working at UM is the people. I am grateful for the amazing people I work with every day. Over the years I have also been able to connect and grow bonds with employees across campus which makes working at UM more of a community where you can learn and grow from support on campus.
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
In short my colleagues, when working with people who care about the impact they are making it’s hard not to want to contribute your best work. It’s empowering to reflect on how my work connects into the exciting work that my colleagues provide to the broader community. Starting at UM as a student, I was met with amazing, strong, and kind mentors this helped shape my work ethic and comradery here on campus. This is something I now strive to be with the students and young professionals here on campus.
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
One of UM’s traditions that I enjoy every year is the “hello walk”. This tradition always makes me smile when walking across campus, there have been a few uplifting quotes that have turned my day around. I think it’s a creative and fun way to brighten up campus, and engage with students from all over!

My favorite part of working for UM is multi-dimensional: I thoroughly enjoy the work I do, and the team that I get to do it with. I’ve met so many extremely talented individuals in my time at UM and it makes every single day enjoyable. The “cherries on top” are the beautiful backdrop that is the UM campus and the work-life balance that I get to enjoy.

My inspiration at work comes from those who come to work every day ready to do whatever it takes to help a student or employee, streamline a process, or build meaningful connections across the departments. These individuals are the foundation for our institution and contribute in so many meaningful ways.

This may not be a tradition, but the colors of the changing fall leaves are truly breathtaking. I love coming to work in the fall.

Favorite part about working at UM
The education and student focused stance we can all agree on. Every office and department has their own internal workings and concerns, but at the end of the day, all of us are here for the common goal of helping students further their education, and that solidarity can be very rewarding.
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
The staff and students that we can save the day for. The UM IT Helpdesk often gets people having their worst day due to a technical issue, but when we can salvage that situation, it’s a great feeling seeing some hope return to their eyes.
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
I do like the classic “pumpkin mounted on University Hall”, but my favorite “tradition” is probably when the first big snow hits and the ambient noise on campus becomes more tranquil.

Favorite part about working at UM
My favorite part about working at UM Missoula College is the people. The colleagues I work with most closely feel like family, and that connection is truly special. What makes it even more meaningful is knowing that while we could all be doing something else, we choose to be here—to support and empower our students. The students themselves are incredible. From 15-year-olds to 60-year-olds, they bring unique perspectives, a shared desire to grow, and a drive to explore new opportunities. I’m deeply grateful to be part of their journey and to witness their transformation.
Who inspires you to do your best at work?
I am inspired to do my best work for the students who rely on me to help guide them on their paths. I draw motivation from the incredible female mentors I’ve been fortunate to work with, Bonnie Dux and Grace Gardner, whose guidance and example have shaped my journey. I also couldn’t do my job without my partner in crime, Ben Nelson, who continually sets the bar high and challenges me to excel.
What’s your favorite UM tradition?
My favorite UM tradition is the pumpkin on Main Hall. Despite efforts to put an end to this playful tradition, the urban climbers have successfully prevailed since my days as an undergraduate. Seeing the pumpkin every year fills me with a sense of nostalgia. My favorite new tradition is the Freshman Float. Being at the Missoula College campus, it’s a special experience to walk down to the river and welcome our newest group of students—it’s a fun and memorable way to kick off their journey.
