All English majors with the teaching option must complete a minimum of forty–five (45) credits in English and 128 credits overall. These 45 credits must include the following:
- Either LIT 110: Introduction to Literature or CRWR 211: Intro Poetry Workshop
- Any combination of two (2) of the following courses: LIT 202: The Environmental Imagination, LIT 236: Literary Histories, LIT 246: Genres, Themes, Approaches
- One (1) course chosen from LIT 120: Introduction to Poetry, LIT 201: Introduction to Literary Studies or ENCR 211: Introduction to Creative Writing (Poetry)
- LIT 300: Applied Literary Criticism
- LIT 327: Shakespeare
- Two (2) additional 300–level or 400-level LIT courses.
- The following English Teaching courses: ENLI 465: Structure and History of English for Teachers; ENT 439: Studies in Young Adult Literature, ENT 440: Teaching Writing, ENT 441: Teaching Reading and Literature, ENT 442: Teaching Oral Language and Media Literacy
- Two (2) additional English elective courses (from ENLI (Linguistics), ENCR (Creative Writing), ENIR (Irish Studies), LIT (Literature), WRIT (Composition & Rhetoric, above 100 level), or ENIR (Irish Studies, above 200 level))
- NOTE: Designations: Students must take courses that fulfill the following requirements at or above the 200-level. A -- American Literature; B -- Pre-1700 British Literature; C -- Literature c. 1700-1900 (British or American); D -- Diversity (under-represented voices). See your Academic Advisor and/or the Department of English with questions as to which classes satisfy one or more of these designations on a semester-by-semester basis.
