The keys to making any education abroad experience successful and beneficial are communication and initiative.

Familiarize with the information, key requirements, and resources below, then reach out to your academic advisor, and set up an appointment with the Education Abroad Coordinator to get started on the adventure of a lifetime! Keep in mind that if a semester or full-year exchange are too long for your comfort zone, or if you don't wish to travel abroad alone, then there are other program types that offer shorter-term or group-facilitated opportunities!

First-Year Students (Freshmen)

Start your academic career with a global perspective by living in a new country and immersing yourself in a new culture!  In order to study abroad during your first year as a college student, you must:

  • Be accepted and admitted into the University of Montana
  • Have completed a minimum of 24 university credits before the start of your program abroad
  • Fulfill the GPA requirement of the program to which you wish to apply (no lower than 2.75)

Programs are offered during the fall and spring semesters of your freshman year at select universities. If you meet the credit requirement, however, you might be eligible for a summer program before or after your freshman year at UM!

Upon meeting the above criteria, interested high school students should:

  1. Determine when they would like to go abroad (summer, fall or spring)
  2. Search the program database for an opportunity that is of interest
  3. Get in contact with the Education Abroad Office to set up an interview with the Diretor of Education Abroad and Partnerships
  4. Be interviewed by the Director of Education Abroad and Partnerships, in order for our office to assess your intellectual curiosity, maturity level and academic aptitude.

Upon interviewing successfully, interested high school students should:

  1. Apply for their preferred program
  2. Secure the signature of a parent or guardian for approval
  3. Begin planning the study abroad experience by applying for scholarships nine months to one year before anticipated departure
  4. Ask the Education Abroad Coordinator clarifying questions
