MONTU Strategic Plan
The University of Montana Herbarium Strategic Plan is the end result of a collaborative process that started with the previous herbarium curator, Shannon Kimball, and the Friends of the Herbarium Board of Directors in 2019. The goal of collaborators was understanding and addressing important challenges and opportunities for growth facing both herbaria in general, and specifically MONTU. With MONTU’s mission, challenges, and a vision for opportunities in mind, six strategic goals were formed and described in detail in the first iteration, MONTU 2021 Strategic Plan. Every 5 years MONTU will review and update the Strategic Plan to reflect updates and changes.
In preperation for the 2026 review the current MONTU Curator, Giovanna Bishop, enrolled in the Fall 2025 iDigBio Strategic Planning course for Natural History Collections, co-taught by Austin Mast and David Jennings. The 2026 update was then developed by Giovanna Bishop (Curator), reviewed and edited by Drs. Jedediah Brodie and Meredith Zettlemoyer (Faculty Directors), and Nathalie Wolfram (Director of the University of Montana Broader Impacts Group).
