The University of Montana UM Housing community is very much a part of the total University and Missoula communities. The campus is a center for learning, cultural, and social activities. Residing in a Residence Hall or University apartment places you at the center of these activities. Our mission is to create an atmosphere that is safe, provides for individual growth, and promotes academic exploration and learning.
No community is totally risk free. Crimes take place in our society at large including on university campuses. The University of Montana and the UM Housing Office want to encourage you to take joint responsibility for your safety here on campus. The best protection against criminal acts is for all students, faculty, and staff to be aware of and report any suspicious acts. All members of our community can reduce the risk of campus crimes by being responsible for our personal safety and taking practical precautions.
The University of Montana has resources available to students to assist in their safety on campus. Please do not hesitate to contact any of these offices with questions.

Community Liaison Officer
Serving as the Community Liaison Officer, UMPD officers work closely with the Residence Halls and assist in responding to crimes in progress and ongoing investigations. This position also assists UM Housing staff with mental health issues and conduct issues, and serves to be available to students, staff, and faculty as a law enforcement resource. The Community Liaison Officer also oversees the Area Officer program.
Area Officers have been assigned to a specific Area of Residence Halls in order to build rapport with the community within that area. These officers go on rounds of the buildings with the Resident Assistants, attend floor meetings, and speak with students about crime prevention and personal safety.
The University of Montana Police Department is a State-recognized law enforcement agency that is responsible for the protection of lives and property and responds to all crime activities within the jurisdiction of the University.
