About Faculty Compensation
Faculty compensation at the University of Montana is governed by collective bargaining agreements negotiated between the University and its faculty associations. This page provides an overview of the governing agreements and points to the appropriate resources for compensation-related questions.
Who This Applies To
Faculty
This page applies to faculty members and supervisors working with faculty positions at the University of Montana and Missoula College.
Collective Bargaining Agreements
Faculty compensation, including salary scales, merit increases, and promotion-related pay changes, is governed by the applicable collective bargaining agreement. The most current versions of all agreements are maintained by the Office of the Provost.
The University of Montana has two active faculty collective bargaining agreements:
- University Faculty Association (UFA): Covers tenured and tenure-track faculty at the Mountain campus.
- Missoula College Faculty Association (MCFA): Covers faculty at Missoula College.
Market Adjustments
The University of Montana offers a market adjustment process for tenured and tenure-track faculty whose salaries fall below external market benchmarks or who have received interest from other institutions. This process is administered by the Office of the Provost.
For full details on eligibility, timelines, and how to apply, visit the Market Adjustment page on the Provost's website.

Please contact the Provost Office for questions regarding promotion from one faculty appointment to another (e.g., Assistant Professor to Associate Professor) or when requesting to move faculty from non-tenurable to tenurable/tenure-track. For questions involving promotion from a faculty appointment to a non-faculty appointment (e.g., Professor to Associate Dean), please contact the HRS Compensation Office to discuss your situation.
-
Temporary adjustments (including interim appointments) are available for unique circumstances. Please contact the HRS Compensation Office to discuss your situation. For questions involving summer research or teaching assignments (including the Faculty Research Incentive Program [FRIP]), please contact the Provost Office.
