Modernizing printing across the University of Montana
UM Information Technology is partnering with Fisher’s Technology to replace more than 240 printers across the University of Montana.
This project will modernize UM’s printer fleet, improve reliability and security, and create a more consistent and manageable printing environment across campus. The project builds on UM’s ongoing managed-print efforts to reduce costs, energy consumption and unnecessary printing while providing reliable print services to faculty and staff.
What to expect
Printer replacements are expected to begin September 8 and be completed by September 30.
Because the project involves more than 200 printers across campus, replacements will take place on a scheduled basis. Affected departments and areas will receive information about their specific installation date in advance.
If a printer in your area is scheduled for replacement:
- Your area will receive advance notice of the planned installation date.
- Fisher’s Technology will coordinate the delivery and installation of the replacement equipment.
- The existing printer will be removed as part of the replacement process.
- There may be a brief interruption to printing while the replacement is completed.
- UM IT and Fisher’s will work together to get the new equipment operational.
Installation dates are estimates and may change as the project progresses. If the scheduled date creates a conflict with an important event, activity or operational need in your area, please contact Client Technology Manager Jared Sheffield (jared.sheffield@umontana.edu) as soon as possible.
How should I prepare?
Most areas will have little or no preparation required. Departments should review their initial proposed scheduled installation date and identify any activities or operational needs that could be affected by the replacement.

Additional preparation instructions will be provided if they are needed for your location or equipment.

A total of 228 printers are being replaced. The devices being replaced were previously included in the Managed Print Project.
-
Fisher’s Technology and the University of Montana have partnered since 2021 to provide printing equipment and managed print services.
As part of the upcoming printer refresh, Fisher’s will be onsite to assist with removing the existing printers and installing the new devices, as well as setup and device testing.

A few things to plan for:
- Building access: If any printers in your area are located in offices, closets, or other spaces that stay locked, someone will need to be available on your scheduled install day to provide access. Please plan to have a staff member on hand, or contact Client Technology Manager Jared Sheffield in advance.
- Brief downtime: Expect a short interruption to printing while each machine is swapped. Fisher's will handle the removal of the old unit and installation of the new one.
- No other prep needed: Beyond building access, most areas won't need to do anything else to prepare.
-
If concerns arise, please reach out as early as possible to Client Technology Manager Jared Sheffield.
-
It should take a maximum of two hours to ensure proper setup and configuration of each printer. During this time, certain printers may not be available for printing. Should you need to print during this time, please use another FindMe printer.
-
The new printer models are similar to the current printer models you’ve used before. There should be no major changes.
-
You do not need to update or change anything on your computer. These machines, once set up by UM IT and Fisher's, will be available to print directly from your computer just as the previous machines were.
-
The older printers will be collected and removed from campus by the Fisher’s team.
-
After the installation has been completed, if you have questions or concerns please reach out to After the installation has been complete, please reach out to Client Technology Manager Jared Sheffield.
-
No, this project will not change any policies or affect any printing costs or budgets.
