2018 Jestrab Distinguished Lecture on Water

The 2018 Jestrab Distinguished Lecture on Water will be presented by John Leshy, distinguished emeritus law professor at the UC Hastings College of Law. The event will take place on Wednesday, September 26, in Room 101 at the Blewett School of Law.

Prior to joining the faculty at U.C. Hastings, Professor Leshy was Solicitor (General Counsel) of the U.S. Department of the Interior throughout the Clinton Administration. He has also worked on the staff of the House Committee on Natural Resources and was a trial attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice, among other positions. In 2013, he received the Defenders of Wildlife Legacy Award for lifetime contributions to wildlife conservation. Leshy, a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, has authored and co-authored books in mining law, water law, and federal land and resources law.

The Frank & Elvira Jestrab Distinguished Lecture on Water, hosted by the Natural Resources & Environmental Law Program at UM’s School of Law, is free and open to the public. Application is currently pending for one continuing legal education credit. A reception will follow the event.

Inaugural Baucus Institute Speaker Lecture: An Evening with Maureen Dowd and Carl Hulse

Save the date! The Max S. Baucus Institute will present its inaugural speaker series event on the evening of Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at the University of Montana. Maureen Dowd, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and op-ed columnist who has written for The New York Times and Time Magazine, will join Carl Hulse, The New York Times chief Washington correspondent and veteran of more than three decades of Washington reporting. The lecture is open to the general public. More details about the focus of the talk will be announced shortly. The goal of the Baucus Institute’s newest program is to bring global thought leaders to Montana to share their insights about the events, people, and political and social movements that are shaping our world.


Professor Cathay Smith Travels to London to Teach International IP Law

Professor Cathay Smith recently returned from London, England where she was invited to teach a course on International Intellectual Property Law for New York Law School’s Summer London program. Her course covered emerging issues and debates in international intellectual property law such as color and scent marks, fair use and free speech, geographical indications, moral rights and street art, indigenous rights to traditional knowledge, IP in fashion, comedy, and cuisine, and the role of morality in intellectual property. This month, Professor Smith traveled to Chicago to present her latest research on the federal Visual Artists Rights Act (VARA) at Northwestern University School of Law's JIPSA summer workshop, and next month she will be presenting her paper at the Intellectuals Property Scholars Conference hosted by U.C. Berkeley School of Law..

Homecoming Weekend – GRIZ Tickets and CLE Opportunity!

UM Homecoming and Law Alumni Reunion Weekend will take place October 6-7, 2018. Activities include class dinners organized by class members, the Browning Symposium, School of Law alumni tailgate, law school tours, and GRIZ football.

Continuing Legal Education: The Montana Law Review is hosting the 2018 Honorable James R. Browning Symposium on the Friday of Homecoming weekend. The student-run symposium, “The Future of Federal Indian Law and the (New) Roberts Court,” takes place on Friday, October 5, and features a full day of educational programming with a focus on Federal Indian Law. The 2018 event examines tribal sovereignty, federal power, and individual rights. The keynote speakers are Judge Diane Humetewa and Mathew L. M. Fletcher; panelists include Barbara Creel, John Dossett, Michalyn Steele, Gregory Ablavsky, Rebecca Tsosie, Alexander Skibine, Angela Riley, Frank Pommersheim, and Wenona Singel. The program takes place at the law school, and a reception will follow at the Payne Family Native American Center on University of Montana's main campus. Online registration will be available soon. The Montana Law Review is seeking sponsors for the event, which will be given benefits such as special recognition opportunities and complimentary CLE credits for attorneys attending the event. GRIZ Football vs. Portland State University: Griz Football takes on Portland State University at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 6! The Grizzly Athletics Box Office has tickets to the homecoming game held for law alums under “Law School Alumni” for any who have not secured a football ticket yet. Tickets can be purchased at the Griz Tix page or at (406) 243-4051. Law school alumni tickets will only be held until September 17; after this date, any extras will be released to the general public.
