Seven of the soldiers died in combat during the war, and another four later died of combat-related injuries.
But most of the honorees died of influenza during the pandemic of 1918. Five SATC trainees died at the camp on the UM campus. And, 11 others died at a second SATC camp at Fort Missoula.
Five nurses, caring for the SATC trainees, died of influenza in Missoula. The disease also killed five of the UM soldiers who were stationed away from Missoula.
