Course Registration Information for Winter and Spring 2021 (9/29/20)

Dear students,

Please review these important updates as you plan your winter, spring, and summer 2021 course registration.

  • Spring Break 2021 will be converted to an instructional week for all Montana University System institutions, including UM. Our academic calendar and associated deadlines will be updated accordingly, including possible changes for Commencement, summer session 2021, and fall semester 2021. Stay tuned for more information.
  • Socially distanced classroom layouts will continue to be the norm.
  • Outdoor classrooms won’t be available during the winter months. Depending on weather conditions, they may become available later in the spring.
  • Unless an effective vaccine is developed and available, or COVID-19 conditions change, course modality options for future semesters will be similar to fall 2020.
  • The blended modality course fee will be waived for spring semester 2021.
  • Faculty have been instructed to maintain the course modalities for which students initially register and avoid switching to remote instruction mid-way through spring courses.
  • These are the course modality options available for spring semester 2021:
    • Face-to-face: Students and faculty work together in a scheduled classroom. (Section numbers will be 01-25.)
    • Remote: Students and faculty work together on scheduled dates/times using platforms like Zoom (Section numbers will begin with the letter R followed by a number 01-25. For example, a remote section of WRIT 101 will appear as WRIT 101.R01.)
    • Blended or Hybrid: In-person and some virtual or online elements are combined. Can include Hyflex courses (allowing students to participate online at scheduled dates/times or face-to-face - section numbers will begin with the letter B followed by a number 01-25. For example, a remote section of WRIT 101 will appear as WRIT 101.B01.)
    • Online: Learning does not require any in-person meeting and are most often available all the time to allow students to access learning at their convenience. Online courses are usually developed with support from UMOnline. Students enrolled in online classes will pay an online course fee of $48 per credit. (Section numbers will be 50-65.)
