In-Person MSW

The In-Person MSW is UM's traditional MSW pathway, with coursework completed on the University of Montana campus in Missoula. Students may complete the program full-time or part-time.

Program Format and Schedule

The In-Person MSW includes a required two-day orientation. Full-time students should plan to be in Missoula for classes on Thursdays and Fridays. Part-time students attend classes on Thursdays during their first year and on Fridays during their second and third years.

The program also incorporates some online learning weeks to reduce travel for students coming from outside the Missoula Valley.

The 60-credit curriculum includes 51 credits in core social work courses and 9 elective credits.

Practicum

Students complete 900 practicum hours across two academic years, with 450 hours completed during the generalist year and 450 hours during the specialization year. Practicum takes place during the fall and spring semesters and averages approximately 15 hours per week. Part-time students begin practicum in the fall of their second year.

Practicum provides students with hands-on experience in the field while promoting social justice and serving marginalized members of their local communities.

Eligibility

Applicants must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 for all undergraduate work, based on a 4.0 scale.

Applicants with an undergraduate GPA below 3.0 may still apply but must submit a brief GPA statement as part of their application.

Applications open September 15. The deadline for all application materials is February 15.
