What do you appreciate most about supervising practicum students?
I had such an amazing practicum experience myself, and I truly credit it with giving me the skills and confidence to jump-start my career. Because of that, I’m grateful for the opportunity to give back to students entering the field. It’s refreshing to work with people at the beginning of their social work journey—the fresh perspectives and thoughtful questions they bring often encourage us to reflect on and improve the way we do things.
What does being a social worker mean to you?
To me, being a social worker means understanding both the personal challenges people face and the larger systems impacting their lives. It means advocating for systems change, supporting people who feel disempowered, and helping individuals find their voice when they feel unheard. One of the most rewarding parts of this work is helping people break complicated situations down into manageable steps so they can move forward with confidence.
How does your role as a social worker relate to your role as a supervisor?
Many social work philosophies translate naturally into supervision—recognizing strengths, empowering others, and creating an environment that is open and approachable. I enjoy working alongside my team to navigate challenges, offer support, and encourage growth. My experience in the field helps guide my decision-making and allows me to coach and mentor others effectively.
