Shelby Area Surveyor – Part-Time
The Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research (ITRR) at the University of Montana is currently looking for an individual to conduct nonresident visitor surveys and resident travel and recreation surveys (25 variable hours per week). The ideal start date will be June 15, 2026. This candidate will live in the Shelby area (other communities in this proximity will be considered) and be able to travel to Babb, St. Mary, East Glacier, Browning, Cut Bank, Conrad, Havre, and surrounding communities.
The position involves:
- Talking to both nonresidents and Montana residents about their travel experiences and recording the data on an iPad (provided)
- Collecting highway proportion counts of vehicles at Montana ports of entry
- Uploading data after each shift
- Mailing highway counts to ITRR on a bi-weekly basis
- Providing a twice-weekly status of activities to ITRR via telephone
- Submitting hours worked and miles traveled via e-mail (experience with Excel preferred)
- Being able to work independently with little direct supervision
Salary is $24-26/hour (depending on experience), and mileage is reimbursed at the state rate (currently $0.337 per mile).
Applicants must have a valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle, and be willing to drive within the duty area in a variety of road conditions. Internet access (wireless preferred) is required for bi-weekly paperwork submission and daily uploading of data.
Applicants must be willing to work on average 3 days per week (8-10 hrs./day) in all types of weather, with work days and hours alternating each week.

Glasgow Area Surveyor – Part-Time
The Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research (ITRR) at the University of Montana is currently looking for an individual to conduct nonresident visitor surveys and resident travel & recreation surveys (25-29 variable hours per week). The ideal candidate will live in the Glasgow area and be able to travel to the following areas: Chinook, Malta, Glasgow, Plentywood, Culbertson, Circle, and Wolf Point. Other communities in this general area may be considered for the candidate to be based out of.
The position involves:
- Talking to both nonresidents and Montana residents about their travel experiences and recording the data on an iPad (provided)
- Collecting proportion counts along highway entry points into the state (Raymond and Hwy 2)
- Uploading data after each shift
- Mailing highway counts to ITRR on a bi-weekly basis
- Providing a twice-weekly status of activities to ITRR via telephone
- Submitting hours worked and miles traveled via e-mail (experience with Excel preferred)
- Being able to work independently with little direct supervision

Flathead/Kalispell Area Surveyor – Part-Time
The Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research (ITRR) at the University of Montana is currently looking for an individual to conduct nonresident visitor surveys and resident travel and recreation surveys (25-29 variable hours per week). The ideal candidate will live in the Kalispell area and be able to travel to West Glacier, Hungry Horse, Columbia Falls, Whitefish, Libby, Troy, Eureka, Bigfork, and Polson areas.
The position involves:
- Talking to both nonresidents and Montana residents about their travel experiences and recording the data on an iPad (provided)
- Surveying and counting nonresidents at the Kalispell airport (requires passing a background check)
- Collecting proportion counts along highway entry points into the state
- Uploading data after each shift
- Mailing airport and highway counts to ITRR on a bi-weekly basis
- Providing a twice-weekly status of activities to ITRR via telephone
- Submitting hours worked and miles traveled via e-mail (experience with Excel preferred)
