UM Rejects Hate and Violence

March 19, 2021

Dear UM family,

Like you, I was saddened by this week's attack in Atlanta. Throughout the pandemic, we have been reminded of the continued need to counter hateful, violence-inducing language and actions that erode our communities. Unfortunately across the country, we've seen a rise in harmful rhetoric and violence targeted at Asian Americans. This calls all of us to loudly reject - in our words and actions - what is unacceptable and un-American.

From Montana's earliest days, Asian Americans have had profound impacts across our state and here on our campus. Our Asian American friends, colleagues and neighbors are valued members of our UM and Missoula families.

I ask that we all be aware that some members of the UM family are disproportionately impacted by incidents like this. These friends and colleagues often carry a heavier load of fear and anxiety. Across our campus, there are resources for members of our UM family who may need additional support.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to the Student Advocacy Resource Center, UM Global Engagement Office, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, Stop AAPI Hate or another support network on campus during this time. The UM community may report acts of identity-based harm to the Office of Equal Opportunity and Title IX.

UM's commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse campus community will not waver. We will continue to support racial and social justice at every turn.

Seth
