Student Music Union

About Us

The Student Music Union (SMU) at the University of Montana provides diverse musical opportunities for 20 student groups.

The primary responsibility of the Student Music Union is to serve as an advocate for the general welfare of the students and participating organizations. Clubs that are incorporated in the SMU cover a wide range of styles, skill level, group size and professional development opportunities

How to join a group

While ASUM Groups are separate entities, many SMU groups work and organize through the School of Music.

Music Clubs in the Student Music Union are required to follow the same initial recognition process as all other ASUM Student Groups. As such, all clubs are required to have a Griz Hub page.

Contact an SMU board member to be directed to the President of the club of interest.

Finally, if you are unable to reach a club, please contact the ASUM Business Manager.

New Groups Joining the Music Union

Student Music Union groups follow the same initial recognition process as all other ASUM Student Groups.

After receiving ASUM recognition, the SMU requires a digital copy of the group’s recognition documents (including Bylaws, Risk Management Plan, and Leadership Agreements) submitted to the SMU Executive Board. The SMU Board will then review and approve the group in joining the SMU.

If approved, the group is able to attend SMU meetings and utilize some of its funding resources.
