Earn Credit for What You Already Know
The University of Montana is committed to providing accessible, high-quality education that transforms lives and creates pathways to success. Our credit for prior learning (CPL) program recognizes that college-level learning happens in many places and through a wide range of experiences.
UM’s CPL program allows you to earn credit for your prior work, training, and life experience and apply it toward your certificate program, associate’s degree, or bachelor's degree. UM’s CPL Navigator, Dominic Beccari, is your point of contact for credit for prior learning and will work with you and UM faculty and staff to make the process as smooth as possible.
Do You Qualify for Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)?
- Are you a veteran or active military service member?
- Do you have substantial work experience?
- Did you receive formal industry training, professional certifications or licenses, or industry-recognized credentials?
- Did you leave college early to work in your field?
If you answered “yes” to any of these, our CPL Navigator can help you explore your options.
Eligibility Requirement
To be eligible for Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), students must be admitted to the University of Montana and actively pursuing a degree or certificate. Credit is awarded only for demonstrated college-level learning that aligns with course outcomes, not for experience alone.
CPL Process
-
Reach out to our CPL Navigator to get started and confirm your eligibility.
-
You will meet with the CPL Navigator to build a learning inventory together. You will review your prior learning—such as exams, military training (JST), industry credentials, and workplace training—and identify where you may be eligible to earn UM credit.
-
Common CPL Pathways:
- Military training (JST/ACE)
- Industry certifications and licenses
- Exams (CLEP, AP, IB)
- Portfolio/Challenge Exam
- Industry/workplace trainings and experience
Students with Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) scores should have official transcripts sent directly to the Admissions Office through College Board or from their high school, as these are evaluated separately from the CPL process.
-
The CPL Navigator will help you gather the required documentation and will work with the appropriate academic department to confirm whether your learning aligns with UM course outcomes and academic standards. Credit is awarded for verified, college-level learning—not experience alone.
-
If your CPL request is approved, you will receive an email confirming the decision. Evaluations will then post the credit to your record, and you can update your degree plan and move forward. Please allow 2–3 weeks for processing after approval.
Why Consider Credit for Prior Learning?
- CPL saves you time. You will complete your certificate or degree faster.
- CPL saves you money. Credits awarded through the process cost less than a traditional course and sometimes have no cost at all.
- Learners who receive credit for prior learning are more likely to graduate.
- Credit for prior learning helps you understand and explain the many ways you have acquired learning through work or life experiences.
