Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) FAQs
-
CPL is not awarded for time on the job. It’s awarded when you can show you have the knowledge and skills that match the learning outcomes of a UM course.
-
In most cases, yes—students generally need to be admitted and enrolled for CPL to be awarded. If you’re not sure where you are in the process, contact the CPL Navigator.
-
CPL does not affect your UM GPA. It is posted as credit (not a traditional graded course), depending on the pathway.
-
It depends on the pathway, but common documents include:
- Official test scores (AP/IB/CLEP/DSST)
- Joint Services Transcript (JST) or other military records
- Credential/certification documentation (and sometimes verification links)
- For portfolios: evidence such as work products, training materials, supervisor verification, licenses, or other artifacts
-
A portfolio is a structured submission where you explain and document your learning and connect it to UM course outcomes. Portfolios are commonly used when learning is complex and doesn’t fit neatly into an exam or credential credit recommendation.
-
Timing varies based on the pathway and how quickly documentation is available. Some routes (like standardized exams) can move quickly once UM has official records. Portfolio or faculty-reviewed pathways may take longer because they require academic review.
-
CPL is most valuable when it applies to general education requirements or major/minor requirements. Not all CPL credit will apply to every program, so we’ll focus on credit that helps you progress toward your specific degree.
-
Sometimes—but it depends on the course, program rules, and the type of CPL. Many CPL opportunities are most common at the introductory level. The CPL Navigator can help you explore what’s possible in your department.
-
No. CPL is not awarded for a course you are currently enrolled in, have audited, or have already completed.
-
If a request is not approved, you’ll receive guidance on next steps (for example: additional documentation, a different assessment method, or the best UM course to take instead). In some cases, an appeal process may apply.
-
Contact the CPL Navigator and be ready to share what branch/role you served in and whether you have your JST available. We’ll guide you on how to submit official records and what can be evaluated.
-
Possibly, depending on UM’s evaluation and how (or whether) the learning is documented and transferable. Send the details to the CPL Navigator and we’ll advise on the correct next step and documentation.
