Social Wellbeing
Find your people. Build your community.
Social wellbeing isn't about being an extrovert or having a massive following. It’s about the quality of your connections. It’s the feeling that you have a support system you can rely on and a place where you truly belong.
Finding Belonging at UM
Belonging is a fundamental need, like food and water. Here is how to find your "Third Place" (the space between home and school).
-
Connect with those who share your background or life experiences.
- The Branch Center: A hub for underrepresented students and cultural groups.
- American Indian Student Services (AISS): Support and community for Native and Indigenous students.
-
Working toward a goal is the fastest way to bond.
- Student Groups: Over 150+ clubs are waiting for you in the ASUM Directory.
- Campus Rec: Join an intramural team or a group fitness class at the Fitness and Recreation Center.
- Campus Jobs: Coworkers are a built-in support system. Check out the Career Center | University of Montana.
Social Media & You
Is your feed fueling you or draining you?
Social media often shows a "curated highlight reel" while we experience our "messy behind-the-scenes." To protect your social wellbeing, try these Digital Boundaries:
- Curate with Care: Mute or unfollow accounts that trigger "Comparison Trap" feelings.
- Tech-Free Zones: Keep the dinner table or the first 30 minutes of your morning phone-free.
- The Digital Detox: Even 24 hours away from apps can reduce anxiety and help you reconnect with your physical environment.
