General Education Writing
General Education Writing Courses
UM’s general education guidelines require students to meet three writing course requirements: Introductory, Intermediate, and Advanced Writing.
We suggest taking these in order. However, they are three distinct classes, so even if you’ve taken an Intermediate writing class, you’ll still need to take an Introductory course.
Some students receive transfer credit for these courses. Dual enrollment, Running Start, Early College, AP, or IB credits can help you meet your Gen Ed Writing requirements.
- For students with dual enrollment, running start, or early college credit, have your official college transcripts sent to Admissions for evaluation. You can check your transfer equivalency here.
- Check here for the AP scoring information: https://www.umt.edu/admissions/apply/advanced-credits/ap.php
- Check here for IB scoring information: https://www.umt.edu/admissions/apply/advanced-credits/ib.php
Introductory Writing offers an introduction to thinking, writing, research, argumentation, and revision skills required across majors. Credit for the course is earned by taking College Writing I (WRIT 101) or College Writing 1 PLUS (WRIT 101 PLUS) or through transfer/AP/IB credit
Intermediate Writing courses offer writing skills across disciplines in a wide variety of courses across the majors. It can also be met through transfer credit/AP/IB credit.
Advanced Writing courses teach students how to write in their majors. The courses are either in your major or your major will define the required course.
