Dependent Tuition Waiver Info
The Dependent Tuition Waiver provides eligible University of Montana employees with a partial tuition waiver for their spouse, adult dependent, or financially dependent children enrolled at an MUS campus. This page covers who qualifies, what the waiver covers, and how to apply each semester.
Who This Applies To
Faculty | Staff | Contracts
You must be working at least 0.75 FTE (three-quarter time, or approximately 30 hours per week) and have completed 120 calendar days of employment before your dependent can use this benefit. Seasonal, fixed-term, and student employees are not eligible.
Process
-
To qualify, you must:
- Be employed at least 0.75 FTE (three-quarter time, or approximately 30 hours per week) for 120 calendar days before the benefit begins. Eligibility starts at the beginning of the first full academic semester or summer session following that 120-day waiting period.
- Maintain at least 0.75 FTE for the entire academic term in which your dependent uses the waiver.
Temporary, seasonal, fixed-term, and student employees are not eligible.
-
An eligible dependent is one of the following:
- Your spouse or adult dependent, as defined in the MUS Employee Benefits Plan
- A financially dependent child as defined by the Internal Revenue Code who is unmarried and under age 25
Dependents may use the waiver to attend a two-year college affiliated with UM or MSU, pursue any other two-year or certificate program within the MUS, or obtain a first baccalaureate degree at any MUS campus. Dependents may not use the waiver to attend law school or pursue a graduate degree.
-
The Dependent Tuition Waiver covers 50% of residential tuition only. The following are not covered:
- Registration fees, course fees, or any other mandatory or miscellaneous fees
- Non-credit, continuing education, or other self-supporting courses
- Law school tuition
- Graduate degree tuition
Note that any federal financial aid your dependent receives may be reduced as a result of this waiver. Up to two dependents may use the waiver simultaneously in the same academic term. If you also use the Faculty and Staff Tuition Waiver in the same term, only one dependent waiver is available to you that term.
-
Your dependent must be formally admitted to an MUS campus and registered for coursework. Completing this application does not register your dependent for courses.
-
A new application is required for every academic term. Important: Applications must be submitted no sooner than 45 days before the start of the semester and no later than the 15th day of classes. Applications submitted after this deadline may be denied.
The Dependent Tuition Waiver Application requires your signature as the employee and approval signatures from your supervisor and Director or Dean.
