How Faculty Hiring Works at UM
Faculty hiring is governed by the applicable collective bargaining agreement and is administered in close coordination with the Office of the Provost. While HRS supports the administrative and compliance aspects of faculty searches, the Provost's office provides primary oversight of the search process including approval authorities and procedural requirements.
Faculty searches use Interfolio as the applicant tracking system rather than NEOED. Positions are posted at apply.interfolio.com/53871/positions.
The Faculty Search Process
The general search process for faculty positions follows a similar structure to other searches at UM, with several important distinctions.
Prework and approvals: Faculty hiring at UM follows an annual cycle. Each year, colleges and departments propose faculty positions they anticipate needing for the coming academic year. These proposals are reviewed and approved through the Provost's office as part of a consolidated annual process rather than on a position-by-position basis. Once a position is approved through the annual cycle, the department works with the Dean's office and HRS to initiate the search and post the position through Interfolio.
If a faculty hiring need arises outside the annual cycle, contact your Recruitment Specialist and the Provost's office to discuss whether and how the position can be initiated.
Recruitment and review: The search committee reviews applications, determines interview candidates, conducts interviews, and completes reference checks. The search resources available for other position types also apply to faculty searches.
Faculty involvement: Faculty searches at UM typically require broader departmental participation than other position types. Depending on the position and applicable CBA provisions, this may include a meeting with the full faculty body and a faculty vote on the recommended candidate. Contact your Recruitment Specialist and Dean's office to confirm the specific requirements for your search.
Offer and hiring: Once a candidate is selected and approved, the offer process is coordinated through the Provost's office and HRS. Compensation for faculty positions is governed by the applicable CBA.
