Ridge Scholarship and Collection

Ridge Scholarship

The Institute of Health and Humanities annually awards scholarships (up to $1,000/awardee) for research and creative works on topics at the intersection of health and/or healthcare and the humanities. Qualified graduate and upper-division undergraduate students in all disciplines are invited to apply.

How does climate change impact healthcare? Does providing patients an opportunity to write narratives about their care experience promote health or healthcare? How does the history of Big Tobacco inform contemporary health initiatives? These are examples of the kinds of intersectional inquiry the Institute encourages. Projects must engage both health/healthcare and the humanities (at least one discipline within the umbrella category of “humanities” which includes the traditional humanities subjects but also the social sciences and arts). The projects should also make use of materials in the Ridge Library Collection (see below for more details).

There is a general expectation that the research or creative work will be completed or advanced enough in time for the student to present at the Ridge Scholar Panel of GradCon in late February/early March 2023 (although applicants with meritorious projects with a slightly later completion date will be considered for presentation in conjunction with later).

Applications will be accepted starting immediately and until the awards are exhausted, but no later than May 15, 2022. Early application is encouraged. Send email inquiries to ihh@mso.umt.edu.

Application Deadline: May 15, 2022

Ridge Library Collection

The Ridge collection is a special collection of monographs, serials, and and audio/visual materials that represent the interdisciplinary scholarship of the medical humanities. The core collection contains approximately 1,200 volumes and will expand annually by 150 to 200 additions.

A generous gift has enabled Institute of Medicine and Humanities to begin a collection, specific to the medical humanities, books and journals. The Ridge collection is housed, along with its medical collections, in The Learning Center at St. Patrick Hospital. Visitors also have computer access to the library webpage with its links to topical resources on the Internet.

The Ridge Library is open to the public Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm at 500 W Broadway, street level. For more information about the library, visit the Learning Center website.

The Ridge Library collection is available for online browsing through the Mansfield Library at the University of Montana for those with Mansfield Library access.
