There are two Chemistry tracks at UM:
- Chem 121N Track
- Students in the CHMY 121N track do not need to take the Chemistry Placement Exam.
- Chem 141N Track
- The Chemistry Placement Exam is required ONLY for students whose major calls for them to take either CHMY 141N College Chemistry I or CHMY 104 Preparation for Chemistry in the first semester.

- PHYS Physics (only those with a concentration in Teaching Broadfield Science)

Course options for Chem 141N Track
CHMY 141N College Chemistry I
CHMY 141N is only recommended if your major requires you to complete two or more years of chemistry.
CHMY 104 Preparation for Chemistry
Need some extra support before starting CHMY 141N? Students who struggle with a significant proportion of the questions on the Chemistry Placement Exam can improve their skills at scientific reasoning, applications of algebra, and the fundamentals of chemistry by taking CHMY 104 before CHMY 141N. This course is designed to provide a sound understanding of these fundamentals so you can succeed in CHMY 141N. The Chemistry Placement Exam is used to determine if this option is right for you.
CHMY 104 IS NOT recommended for students whose majors require CHMY 121N, and it will not meet a Natural Science General Education Requirement.
How do I sign up for the assessment?
As a new student, you can complete the "Plan My Courses" form on your Admitted Student Checklist in Slate. Only students with majors that require CHMY 141N will have access to the Chemistry Placement section of that form where you can select the Chemistry Placement.
After you submit the form, you will be enrolled in Canvas, the Learning Management System (LMS) that is used for courses, workshops, and trainings. Enrollment is processed on a weekly basis where those who complete the "Plan My Courses" form by Wednesday will be enrolled the next day.

Signup Available in the Admitted Student Checklist in Slate: Friday, October 18, 2024
Weekly Enrollment Batches:
- Deadline for each weekly enrollment batch is Wednesday night at 11:59pm.
- Deadline to get enrolled for first weekly batch is October 23, 2024 (placement enrollment runs on Thurs. October 24)
- Last date to signup using the form in the Admitted Student Checklist is Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at 11:59 pm.
