Big Sky Experience Schedule

Welcome to the UM Family!

The Big Sky Experience

Students will be placed into small groups when they check-in for the Big Sky Experience and all sessions are mandatory unless otherwise noted by their UM Advocate leader.  If you have any conflicts or concerns with the schedule please contact Devin Carpenter at 406-243-2332.

Families and guests are encouraged to attend programming for any session marked with an asterisk (*). All unmarked sessions are devoted to setting up our new students to be successful members of the University of Montana community on their own, and they will be placed into small groups of peers.

If you are a student with a disability and wish to request reasonable accommodations for an orientation session, contact Devin Carpenter at orientation@mso.umt.edu to discuss the specific modifications. Please be advised, we may request that you work with the Office for Disability Equity located in Lommasson Center 154 in order to coordinate your reasonable modifications. Hear from President Bodnar as we kick off your Big Sky Experience program!

Depart from the University Center Ballroom

This session will be the first time you meet your Advocate Small Group Leader and get to know some of your future classmates. You will remain with this small group throughout the day.  After getting to know one another, a Griz Ambassador tour guide will lead you on an abbreviated campus tour.

Your students are off and running - now it's your turn to ask questions and hear from the experts on campus who are here to support your student's success.  An abbreviated campus tour provided by a Griz Ambassador will follow for anyone who is interested.

This session concludes our family program, and students will proceed the rest of the day on their own with the assigned small group leader.

Emma B Lommasson Center, Food Zoo (open from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.)

If you are living on campus, your meal plan is active!  You are encouraged to use it at the Food Zoo, our all-you-care-to-eat dining facility.  Students who do not have a meal plan are invited to eat in the Food Zoo as well, and should ask for a voucher from their UM Advocate. 

Families are also invited to attend lunch with their student but will need to pay the entrance fee of $13 per person.

At UM, students are at the center of all we do, and your academic success and personal growth are our top priority.  This session will build upon the many things you learned about during your online New Student Orientation, and will be presented by representatives from the Office for Student Success, UM Wellness, Financial Education,  Campus Parking, and the UM Police Department.

Follow Your UM Advocate

In this small group session, students will split back up with their UM Advocate to have the chance to ask questions in a much smaller setting, get the real details on what college academics can be like, and share tips and tricks with one another.

The University of Montana recognizes and celebrates diversity, works toward equity, and prioritizes inclusion. This learning session is co-facilitated by the Student Advocacy Resource Center and the Office of Inclusive Excellence for Student Success.

Building on the information you received during your New Student Orientation, this session will continue to address topics related to diversity, equity and inclusion, gender and sex based harm and discrimination, and how you can be an active bystander to help maintain UM's Community of Respect.

Students will split back up in to their Small Groups to discuss with their UM Advocate the information they just covered in the previous session.  You will have the chance to share your thoughts, hear from your peers, and participate in a short debriefing activity

You made it!  Whether you are heading home after a long day of the spring Big Sky Experience, or somewhere else on campus to handle remaining business, the Campus Activities Board and Student Life would like to wish you a happy first semester and send you off with some light snacks and treats for the road ahead.

Today is the big day if you will be living with UM Housing on campus!  Arrive on campus at your assigned move-in time and follow all instructions given by the UM Housing team to make this transition as seamless as possible for you and your classmates.  Keep an eye out for Move-In Crew volunteers ready to assist you!

Your dining plan is now active for the semester and you will be able to enjoy this all-you-care-to-eat dining location all year long. Meal times throughout the week mimic meals times during the semester, so you can start getting in to a routine and establishing healthy eating habits now!

Monday-Friday, August 21-25

Breakfast: 7 - 8:30 a.m.
Lunch: 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.*
Dinner: 5 - 6:30 p.m.**

It's time to get checked in and get started.  Be sure to check in today if at all possible, any time during these five hours and as you have down time for moving in to your Residence Hall and taking care of other business.  You will receive your name tag and small group assignment, some awesome swag and a UM t-shirt, and important information about the week.

Campus Dining has an amazing meal planned for you, featuring Montana raised Wagyu beef and unique dishes highlighting produce from our on-campus garden.  Students can use their meal plans, and families are invited to purchase a meal for $10.

Once dispersed to their assigned small group, students should follow all instructions provided to them by their UM Advocate.  We will be arranging students in a circle on the Oval to take a full incoming class photo with a drone.  Students will depart from here with their Advocate for their first small group activity.

Moving Camp is a program designed to welcome new Native Griz and their families to the University of Montana. The office of American Indian Student Services (AISS), Native American Studies department, and the Tribal Outreach Specialist will be hosting a lunch and info session for new Native students to answer questions about services and resources available to them.

Join your student union also known as the University Center (UC) as it provides you a night of fun and entertainment. Join in on some table tennis, billiards, or eSports fun in the Gaming Den. Join your Campus Activities Board in some engaging hands-on fun and excitement. Hangout with UM's Fraternities and Sorority Involvement (Greek Life) by swinging by the UC Commons for some FSI trivia with fun prizes. We will have movies going in the UC Theater and some of our businesses like UM Dining, Boba Tea, and the Vault will be open if you are looking to purchase a little treat or something fun for your room. Did we mention it was a Pajama Party? Keep you eye out for a free cereal station hidden within the UC.

ASUM Transportation is providing shuttle service between the UM Transit Hub and Caras Park from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m.  Buses will run a continuous loop approximately every 30 minutes.  Last shuttle returns to campus at 8:30 p.m.

We invite you to enjoy the splendor of downtown Missoula for your dinner this evening.  You can either purchase dinner at Downtown ToNight or use your meal plan on campus before heading down to check out the music.  The University of Montana’s UDash Bus will provide complimentary shuttles to the Missoula Downtown, just as they do for students during the school year! Departing from the Music Building Bus Stop, shuttles will drop you off out front of the historic Wilma Theater, from which you can make your way on foot to Caras Park. There you will find a quintessential Missoula event – Downtown ToNight! Enjoy a plethora of local food vendors and free music! Then hop back on the shuttle to campus for the remaining evening activities.

In addition, you can join the Montana Athletics community for Griz in the Park, wether you can find all of your favorites from Griz Athletics, including coaches, student-athletes, spirit squad members and Monte! Kick off the fall sports seasons with meet-and-greets, photos, autographs, food and fun!

Sing your favorite song, hang out with friends or maybe make some new friends. Join us on the Oval (near the Grizzly Bear Statue) for a fun evening of Karaoke! Bring your blankets or hammocks and enjoy a fun Montana evening!

Let's celebrate making it to the end of a long week of important information, making new friends, and becoming familiar with campus and your new community!  

During this event, students will be transported tot he Sha-ron put-in and then guided down the Clark Fork River by local River Ambassadors.  Students will take-out on campus at the River Bowl fields where UM will be hosting a party with snacks and music.

Shuttles will leave from the Campus Rec parking lot every half hour beginning at 12:30 p.m., with the last shuttle leaving at 3:30 p.m.  Be sure to check in at River Bowl before jumping on the shuttle.

Bring your new BSE dry bag, and a float tube if you have one (we'll have some limited quantities you can borrow, of course). Lifejackets, swag and tradition pins will be provided! 

Please leave anything you do not want to get wet, misplaced, or stolen in your room or vehicle!  No secure storage will be provided onsite.

Outdoor Movie Night! Bring your blanket and join us for Moana and Dungeons and Dragons. This will be an fun evening where you can kick back after your Big Sky Experience and the float, to enjoy some fun with your faculty, staff, friends and classmates.
