No, it is not required that you have an undergraduate degree in Psychology to apply to our graduate program. Applicants can apply with a Bachelor’s degree (B.A., B.S.) in any field. However, we strongly recommend that applicants have experience with conducting research in psychology. Applicants with relevant previous experience, especially, in conducting research at some level, however rudimentary, are more attractive because we can be more confident that the applicant understands both the rewards and frustrations to be encountered in his or her chosen career.

No, we do not have a stand-alone Master's program. However, students in the Experimental Psychology Ph.D. program may earn a Master's on the way to a Ph.D.

Our program generally takes 4-7 years to complete with an average of about 5 years.

It is not required for students to have a Master’s degree prior to applying to our program. However, it may be possible for students who enter our Experimental Psychology Ph.D. program with a Master’s degree to have some of their Master’s courses deemed equivalent to our required courses.

Typically, your personal statement describes what motivates you to pursue a career in psychology. What theoretical issues, research problems, or application areas are your central interests? Why are these issues especially interesting and important? Include in your statement the following: description of research experience, reason for applying to our graduate program, and the name(s) of faculty members who are pursuing similar research in our department with whom you may wish to work.

Personal statements are on average 2-4 pages, double spaced (or equivalent formatting).

The application deadline is December 1st each year. We accept application once a year, for the following academic year, which begins in late August. Complete application packets received after the application date will be considered on a space available basis.

Over the past 5 years, all of our graduates have accepted academic positions (tenure-track faculty positions, postdocs/research fellowships, or academic administrative positions). However, graduates are also well-positioned for professional opportunities in private industry, research institutes, and government.
