School of Social Work

Curriculum

A course of study for social work majors, includes social work classes, extra-departmental requirements, and general education requirements. A full list of degree requirements, including degree maps for both campus and distance students can be accessed through the University of Montana catalog.

All of our social work course requirements are based on Student Learning Outcomes and Program Goals shaped by the Council of Social Work Education Educational and Accreditation Standards.

The BSW program requires:

  • Admission into the School of Social Work requires a 2.75 overall GPA, a 3.00 in Social Work courses and completion of 4 of 7 extra departmental courses.
  • A minimum of 41 social work credits are required for degree completion.
  • Students must complete 120 credits for an undergraduate degree to be awarded. 

2+2 Pathway

Distance students who are accepted to the BSW 2+2 program enter with a range of credits accomplished from partnering colleges. Their path to their Bachelor of Social Work is unique, and a graduation plan is built specifically for them upon acceptance.

The degree map below outlines the required social work courses and credit ranges for additional courses. These ranges account for the number of credits students need to achieve 120 credits.

The suggested course of study for two years is below. Please note that this pathway can be modified into a three year extended pathway. For questions about the extended pathway, please contact your academic advisor.
