The University of Montana has recently started participating in Campus Sustainability Month throughout October. Hosted by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), Campus Sustainability Month celebrates higher education sustainability achievements while raising awareness of the value of sustainability in higher education. During Campus Sustainability Month, institutions around the world engage and inspire incoming students and other campus stakeholders to become leaders for sustainability and celebrate successes.
Please join us as we promote sustainability across campus during October by using the tag #CampusSustainabilityMonth and celebrate sustainability not only in October but during the entire year!
2026 Campus Sustainability Month Events
One Read, One School Fair
UM Sustainability will be tabling at Sentinel High School's resource fair on October 3rd! Highlighting our different programs across UM's campus, we will be exploring the topic of resilience in sustainability/climate issues. Our activities will be based on the framework from Ayana Elizabeth Johnson's book "What If We Get It Right? Visions of Climate Futures".
Missoula Climate Ride - UM Sustainability Team
October 4th; 9:30 AM - 2:00 PM @ Free Cycles
This year, UM Sustainability is hosting a team for the Missoula Climate Ride. Join us on a bike ride to raise awareness of climate issues and build community around finding solutions. If you are unable to ride with us, consider donating to our team fundraiser. Proceeds will be given to local climate organizations: Free Cycles, Families for a Livable Climate, and Climate Smart Missoula.
Fall Clothing Swap on the Oval
October 8th; 11:30 AM - 2:00 PM @ UM Oval
Join us for the 4th annual UM Sustainability Fall Clothing Swap! Swing by between classes to refresh your wardrobe with fun FREE fall clothes. Donations will be accepted the week of the event, Oct. 5th - Oct. 7th, at various locations across campus (TBD). Day-of donations will also be accepted!
Family Weekend Sustainability Tour
October 16th, 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM @ Arboretum Signage
Join us for a tour of the University of Montana's campus from an environmental perspective, where nature's beauty meets a commitment to eco-conscious practices. This tour will feature green initiatives, student-funded projects, energy-efficient buildings, and sustainable landscaping. Discover how UM reduces its carbon footprint through waste reduction, transportation alternatives, and solar energy. As stewards of the world around us, we love sharing (and bragging) about the actions we are taking to protect the Big Sky State

Halloween Costume Swap
October 29th; 10:00 AM - 1:00PM @ The Loop Thrift Store
Don't know what to be for Halloween? Need to get rid of old Halloween costumes? Swing by the Loop Thrift Store for a Halloween Costume Swap and find a new, old costume to wear this Halloween!
Halloween costume donations will be accepted at the Loop during the week leading up to the event.
Virtual Sustainable Halloween Costume Contest

2023 Campus Sustainability Month Events
Green Sports Day w/ Griz Hockey
ASUM Sustainability teamed up with the Griz Hockey team for Green Sports Day! This event was a great opportunity to promote sustainability to a new crowd in order to showcase Campus Sustainability Month. Our booth at the game provided information about ASUM Sustainability, Green Sports Day, and Campus Sustainability Month, as well as promoted UM Transportation’s Rollin’ & Strolling Week by incentivizing sustainable transportation and handing out passports.
Clothing Swap w/ Delta Gamma Sorority
ASUM Sustainability and Delta Gamma worked together to put on a Fall Clothing Swap for Campus Sustainability Month. Donations were collected in various locations across campus during the week leading up to the clothing swap. On the day of, tables were set up on the UM Oval and anyone was welcome to come pick out some fall clothes! No donation or payment was necessary for students to attend the swap. This event promoted sustainable shopping and purchasing on UM's campus!
Reusable Bag Making w/ ASUM Food Pantry
Together, ASUM Sustainability and the ASUM Food Pantry partnered to put on a reusable bag-making event for Campus Sustainability Month. Students could stop by and learn how to turn an old t-shirt into a reusable grocery bag! After the process, students could either keep the bag or donate it to the ASUM Food Pantry, where patrons could use the bags while they shopped.
Rollin' and Stroll' Week w/ ASUM Transportation
During Campus Sustainability Month, ASUM Transportation and ASUM Sustainability hosted UM Rollin' and Stollin' Week. Over the week, several events like Bike Tune-up Days were put on to promote sustainable transportation!
