The University of Montana's Ice Rink is a pond style ice rink, available unless reserved for everyone's enjoyment. All skaters are encouraged to maximize your UM experience here and have fun!

General Rules

All skaters are encouraged to maximize your experience here and have fun! However, we must insist that all skaters practice safe and courteous skating practice. If you are a good skater, help to make others better skaters, watch your speed, stay in control and have fun! We have a zero tolerance for any on or off ice activities that disrupt or may lead to unsafe and dangerous situations. So please use common sense at all times.

Ice Rink Rules:

  • No one is allowed on the ice without ice skates.
  • No one is allowed on the ice while resurfacing or clearing the rink is occurring.
  • Management reserves the rights to interrupt or stop staking for ice resurfacing, special events, or for any other staff-related, ice maintenance or safety purpose.
  • No ice skating against the flow of traffic.
  • Children under the age of 12 should be accompanied by an adult or an experienced skater.
  • No carrying children on the ice.
  • No food, beverages or breakable objects are allowed on the ice.
  • No one is allowed to use the ice rink under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • No profanity, obscene gestures or clothing allowed.
  • Refrain from acting in a manner that may cause or contribute to the injury of themselves or other persons.
  • Refrain from throwing or leaving objects on the rink surface.
  • Refrain from instigating or becoming involved in any type of altercations with any skater or spectator and shall not engage in abusive, abrasive or disorderly conduct.
  • Participants are required to follow directions of the Ice Attendant, UC Staff or University employee at all times.
  • No reckless or speed skating.
  • No jumps or spins during Open Skate. When scheduled, figure skating is limited to ten (10) or less skaters on the rink at a time.
  • No hockey during Open Skate. Hockey is lowed during scheduled times.
  • Read and abide all posted signs, warning and cooperate with rink staff.
  • Maintain a proper lookout to avoid other skaters, objects or conditions on the surface of the rink.
  • Accept responsibility for knowing the range of her/his ability while on skates and skate within those limits.

Skate-At-Your-Own-Risk

UM's Ice Rink is a community, self-monitored ice rink.

Assumption of Risk - by engaging in skating, skaters and spectators are deemed to have knowledge of, and assume the inherent risks of skating which include but are not limited to the following:

  • Injuries that result from collisions of contact with other skaters or individuals who are on the skating surface.
  • Injuries that result from falls.
  • Injuries that involve objects or artificial structures that is within intended path of travel of the skater.

The use of the ice-skating rink and all its facilities have an inherent risk and any participation is totally at the users own risk. No responsibility is accepted or undertaken for the wellbeing of the user or their property.

Fire Pit Rules

  • There is no guarantee for when the fire pits will be lit for usage without a reservation.
  • Fire pits are lit based on the availability of propane.
  • Without a reservation, fire pits are available first-come, first-served.
  • Reservations are available for groups. Reservations are made through Conference and Event Services and include four fire pits and sixteen Adirondack chairs. Individual fire pits are not reservable.
  • You will be asked to leave if the fire pits are reserved for a group. You can check the event calendar for when the fire pits are reserved.
  • Fire pits are not to be moved.
  • Chairs are not to be moved.
  • Drugs and alcohol is not permissible at the fire pits or surrounding areas at anytime.
