Targeted Case Management Training
The Center partnered with the Children’s Mental Health Bureau in the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services, statewide case management providers, caregivers and other community partners to develop a Montana-specific targeted case management e-Learning and tele-coaching training program.
This program will equip new targeted case managers with knowledge, skills and resources to support children and youth diagnosed with a serious emotional disturbance and their families. The goal is to build a shared understanding of effective case management practices and provide tools to identify families’ strengths and goals and help them build a network of support so their children can thrive. We also cover strategies for effective documentation, collaboration and professional partnerships across systems.

About the Training
This training is designed to support new case managers as they transition into their roles while building practical skills in family engagement, meeting facilitation, care coordination and collaboration with other professionals. The course consists of six core lessons, each featuring short, focused online lessons of about an hour each. Case managers will also complete an interactive workbook with their supervisors to reinforce their learning and practice new skills in real-world settings.
The six lessons are:
- Foundations of Targeted Case Management.
- Family-centered Targeted Case Management.
- Building a Partnership From the Start.
- Treatment Planning.
- Treatment Plan Implementation.
- Sustainability in Targeted Case Management.
Case managers will also engage in live, interactive tele-coaching sessions for practice, discussion and peer learning.
What Will Case Managers Learn?
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Apply core principles, values and ethical practices of targeted case management and other key interpersonal and professional skills.
- Engage families using family-centered, collaborative and culturally responsive approaches, including strategies that support resilience in children and adolescents.
- Build strong, trusting partnerships with families and professionals, including their supervisor.
- Engage in strengths-based assessment and goal setting with families.
- Facilitate family-centered treatment planning, develop crisis response plans and guide collaborative meetings.
- Connect families with resources and services, coordinate referrals and monitor progress to support children’s health and well-being.
- Promote personal and professional wellness and resilience to sustain effective practice in targeted case management.
What is the Course Format?
The training is delivered over several weeks on a regular schedule. Participants will complete:
- On-demand learning. Self-paced online modules with short lessons focused on targeted case management concepts and application.
- Community of practice tele-coaching. Live Zoom sessions emphasize skill-building, case discussions and peer connection.
- Experiential learning. Course content is connected to real-world case management experiences.
Who Should Enroll?
This training is intended for new or incoming targeted case managers working with Montana children and youth with serious emotional disturbances and their families.
How Much Does It Cost?
Thanks to funding from the Children’s Mental Health Bureau, this training is currently offered at no cost to participants.
