Targeted Case Management Training

The Montana Targeted Case Management training prepares case managers to effectively support children who have serious emotional disturbances and their families. Emphasizing a strengths-based approach, the training covers skills and strategies for building trust with families and partnering with them to reach their goals.

The Center partnered with the Children's Mental Health Bureau in the Department of Public Health and Human Services to create the training. The Family Ambassador Board — caregivers with lived experience with case management — and agency professionals statewide contributed their voices and suggestions.

About the Training 

The training has three connected parts. Learners who complete all of the following course requirements receive a certificate: 

  • Six e-learning lessons:
    • Foundations of Targeted Case Management
      Core principles, values and ethics that guide the work.
    • Family Engagement
      Family-centered, collaborative, culturally responsive approaches that build connection and trust.
    • Building a Partnership From the Start
      Strengths-based assessment and goal-setting.
    • Treatment Planning
      Strategies to help families prepare for meetings and strengthen teaming.
    • Treatment Plan Implementation
      Connecting families with resources, coordinating services and monitoring progress.
    • Sustainability in TCM
      Ways to build personal and professional wellness and resilience to sustain effective practice.
  • A workbook completed with supervisor support:
    • Written reflections to connect content and practice.
    • Practice activities to build skills and confidence.
    • Ready-to-use resources for helping families identify their strengths, connect with their community and engage in effective treatment.
    • Ask your supervisor prompts to help ensure that case managers understand their professional responsibilities and agency-specific protocols.
  • Seven tele-coaching sessions offered on via an online meeting platform.
    Sessions feature members of the Family Ambassador Board and other presenters whose perspective is shaped by their work in the field. 

  • The training is for targeted case managers who serve children with serious emotional disturbances and their families in Montana.

  • Thanks to funding from the Children’s Mental Health Bureau, the training is free for Montana targeted case managers.

  • At the end of each training session, our team will verify completion of all training requirements and email certificates to learners who have successfully fulfilled all requirements.
