The Department of Educational Leadership at The University of Montana offers graduate students a variety of institution and school-based internships. Internships are emerging as primary avenues to professional employment and provide field-based opportunities for students within their specific K-12 or higher education administrative interests. These internships are designed to place prospective administrators in colleges, universities, and K-12 schools. Graduate students in good standing in the Department of Educational Leadership at The University of Montana are eligible for an internship.  There are three types of internships available through the Department of Educational Leadership:

Montana Board of Public Education Administrative Internship

The Montana Board of Public Instruction Administrative Internship is a partnership between the intern, participating school district, and the Department of Educational Leadership at the University of Montana, and the Montana Board of Public Education. This is a specific Administrative Internship for those individuals who have been hired as either a principal and/or superintendent and do not currently possess a Montana Class 3 Administrative license or the proper administrative endorsement as principal or superintendent. This is an on-the-job internship requiring additional supervision and support from the Department of Educational Leadership. There are fees associated with the Montana Board of Public Instruction Administrative Internship.  Contact the EDLD office for more information.

Field-Based Administrative Internship

The purpose of a Field-Based Administrative Internship is to provide students with a wide range of leadership experiences that will immerse them in meaningful, concentrated, and applicable administrative experiences. These experiences will be designed through a partnership between the intern, selected K-12 school, on-site supervisor, and the Educational Leadership Director of Administrative Interns. The internship design will consists of 45 hours providing opportunities for cognitive links between theory and practice by immersing student interns in situations that require the application of educational theory and skills to administrative challenges. Students in the Field-Based Administrative Internship will be required to enroll in EDLD 594: Administrative Application for three semester credits.

Internships in Higher Education

The Department of Educational Leadership offers two types of internships in the area of higher education. These internship opportunities are an Internship in College Teaching and an Internship in Higher Education Administration.

Internship in College Teaching

The Internship in College Teaching provides students an opportunity for guided and supervised teaching at the college level and assistance to the aspiring college teacher in meeting the needs of a diverse student population, assistance provided in methods of teaching at the college level, theories of learning, use of technology, and evaluation and assessment techniques.

Internship in Higher Education Administration

The Internship in Higher Education Administration provides supervised and guided work in an administrative unit/department at the college/university level.  The specifics of this internship experience will be developed between the student, the university administrative unit, and the Department of Educational Leadership’s Director of Administrative Interns.
