Teaching and Learning Scholarships

THE 2024-25 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION IS CLOSED.

  • General Scholarship Application followed by the;
  • College of Education Conditional Application

Some scholarships may also require the following:

  • An essay in which you: Describe how you meet the criteria for the scholarship that you are applying for, and present your professional goals. Include specific references to awards, accomplishments and activities relevant to the selection criteria. 
  • Unofficial transcripts of all college/university work. 
  • Letters of support specific to your scholarship request(s). The same letters of support can be used for multiple scholarships. If this is the case, make sure you provide your recommender with an inclusive list of criteria to address.

It is highly recommended that applicants also submit their FAFSA as many scholarships have a financial need requirement.

Deadline to apply is March 1st, 2024.

Available Scholarships

Alice Lee Lund Excellence in Teaching Award

Anticipated Amount: $21,000

Criteria: Recipients must be graduate students in the Teacher Education program who have taught or plan to teach in Montana after obtaining their master's degree. Recipients must be Montana residents and will be selected based on merit. 

Alice Lee Lund Rural Education Award

Anticipated Amount: $6,000

(Two $3,000 awards)

Criteria: Recipients must be undergraduate students in good academic standing in the Teacher Education Program who will be student teaching in rural areas of Montana and who have an expressed interest for teaching in rural communities. One recipient will be selected for the fall semester and one for the spring semester.

Rhea Jones Ashmore Literacy Endorsement Award

Anticipated Award: $3,000

(Two $1,500 awards)

Criteria: Deserving undergraduate or graduate in the Teacher Education Program who is seeking their literacy endorsement. If no qualified applicant is identified, then a student in the Teacher Education Program pursuing Elementary Education may be considered.

Walter R. Ames Memorial Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $1,000

Criteria: Graduate students in education at the master's level attending The University of Montana.

George and Laurine Harris Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $7,250

Criteria: The applicant must be a student who intends to be enrolled in a graduate program in education for the year following application for the scholarship. The recipient must have demonstrated superior academic performance, and their motivation, character, ability and potential are also to be considered. The recipient must be from Montana (resident for at least 10 years or high school diploma earned at a Montana high school.)

Eloise Baird Boldt Memorial Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $3,700

Criteria: Student majoring in education who has financial need, possesses academic aptitude and holds traditional values.

Sally and Tom Daer Scholarship in Elementary Education

Anticipated Amount: $2,100

Criteria: Students who are majoring in elementary education and who have financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office or its equivalent in existence at the time of the award. Preference will be given to Montana residents

Linus J. Carleton Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $4,000

(Award may be divided)

Criteria: Undergraduate teacher education students who will be a junior or senior, and selection will be based upon potential in the field of education as indicated by academic performance, motivation, character and ability.

Georgiene Wright D’Angelo Endowed Scholarship for the Support of Future Teachers

Anticipated Amount: $1,900

Criteria: Applicants must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction who intend to teach after graduation. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher and are encouraged to submit supporting documentary and testimonial evidence demonstrating the applicant's eligibility for the award and their personal perseverance in overcoming adversity during their lifetime.

Georgiene Wright D’Angelo Endowed Scholarship for the Betterment of Teachers

Anticipated Amount: $1,900

Criteria: Applicants must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction who intend to teach after graduation. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher and are encouraged to submit supporting documentary and testimonial evidence demonstrating the applicant's eligibility for the award and their personal perseverance in overcoming adversity during their lifetime.

 Janet Fowler Dargitz Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $1,000

Criteria: Deserving students who have been admitted to the Teacher Education Program with an Elementary Education major. The recipient must be a Montana high school graduate (with preference to a Montana-born student) who has financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office need analysis and who demonstrates academic excellence. The donor prefers that a student only receive the scholarship once, however, upon reapplication, he or she could receive it twice.

Mildred DuFresne Memorial Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $400

Criteria: Students majoring in education who are deemed worthy by the UM Phyllis J. Washington College of Education faculty scholarship committee.

Paul Fawley Memorial Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $1,100

Criteria: The purpose of the Paul Fawley Memorial Scholarship is to provide scholarships to students who are returning to the University to pursue careers as classroom teachers at the elementary or secondary level.

  1. Candidates may be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree; however the intent is not to prepare them for administrative work or teachers at the college level, but rather, for teaching in the K-12 grades.

  2. While academic performance is necessary and important, the basis for selection shall not be based on high academic performance, but rather on the candidate's potential for success as a teacher.

  3. It must also be recognized that returning students may have family and other obligations that make it financially difficult to change or alter careers. For this reason, need is not to be a factor in determining the recipient.

  4. The highest priority should be on the individual's desire and commitment to teach.

Bob Gessler Endowed Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $1,500

Criteria: Students admitted to the Teacher Education Program in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction who have financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid need analysis. Recipients must be pursuing their Secondary Education Licensure with an emphasis in history. Recipients must intend to teach after graduation. Preference shall be given to residents of Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee.

Noah Ginnings Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $150

Criteria: Undergraduate seniors who are student teaching through the Phyllis J. Washington College of Education will be given first preference. 

Vernon and Myrtle Glascock Scholarship in Education

Anticipated Amount: $2,500

Criteria: Montana residents enrolled in the Teacher Education Program in the Department of Teaching and Learning who have financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid needs analysis. Recipients must be pursuing their Secondary Education Licensure with an emphasis in General Sciences, Mathematics or English. Recipients must intend to teach after graduation.

Royal and Norma Johnson Family Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $1,500

Criteria: Deserving students in the Phyllis J. Washington College of Education who are education majors at the University of Montana.

James and Sody Jones Math and Science Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $8,250

Criteria: Students enrolled in the Phyllis J. Washington College of Education at the University of Montana who will be pursuing secondary teaching licensure with a primary focus in math or science. Students must be graduates of a Montana high school and need to maintain a B average while enrolled in the College.

Kleis Larsen Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $2,100

Criteria: Full-time education major at UM. The recipient must be a Montana high school graduate and plan to teach in Montana for a minimum of four years after graduation. Selection will be based on character, leadership, need and academic achievement.

Robert and Linda Larson Family Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $2,000

(Award may be divided)

Criteria: Junior, senior, or graduate level students who have financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid need analysis. Recipients must be pursuing their Education Licensure or Master of Education with an endorsement in Special Education. Recipients must intend to teach after graduation.

Lovina and Jasper Lewis Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $1,300

Criteria: Qualified recipients are students (juniors and seniors) who have been admitted to the Teacher Education Program. Students should demonstrate financial need as determined by the dean of the Phyllis J. Washington College of Education, or her/his designee, with preference for students completing their culminating student teaching practicum during the award year. Preference given to students from Butte, Montana, if there are no qualified students from Butte, then other qualified students from Montana may be selected.

Christine Lynn Maristuen Endowed Scholarship for Special Education Teachers

Anticipated Amount: $1,300

Criteria: Recipients must be admitted to the Special Education Endorsement program in the Department of Teaching and Learning and must have the desire and potential to succeed in the field of special education. Recipients must be residents from the following counties along the "Hi-Line" of Montana: Glacier, Toole, Liberty, Hill, Pondera, Blaine, Phillips, Valley, Daniels, Sheridan and Roosevelt.

Darrel and Elsie Minifie Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $1,100

Criteria: The purpose of the Darrel and Elsie Minifie Scholarship is to provide scholarships for students at the University of Montana who meet the following criteria:

  1. graduate students in the Phyllis J. Washington College of Education pursuing licensure or advanced coursework with a primary focus in special education;

  2. have professional goals of teaching in a collaborative educational environment where educational prevention and intervention are guided by evidenced-based practices;

  3. reside in Montana and are committed to teaching in Montana upon completion of graduate program, and

  4. have and/or will maintain a graduate grade point average of 3.5 or above.

Donald C. and Patricia Orlich Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $5,400

Criteria: Recipients must show promise for becoming outstanding teachers. Preference is given to Butte high school graduates, but others may also be considered.

Suzy Peters Memorial Teaching Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $1,000

Criteria: Juniors or seniors majoring in elementary education with a GPA of 3.2 who have been full time students at the University of Montana for at least two years; who show a strong involvement in community service and illustrate a passion for lifelong learning and who intend to teach in an elementary school setting after graduation. Preference shall be given to graduates of Montana high schools.

Maureen Beasley Rovig Scholarship in Education

Anticipated Amount: $8,600

Criteria: Qualified applicants must have been admitted to the Teacher Education Program with an Elementary Education major. It is the donors' preference that scholarships be awarded to graduates of Libby High School, Libby MT. If no qualified applicants are available from Libby High School, then awards may be made to graduates of any Montana high school.

Pre-Education Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $2,000

Criteria: Recipients shall be sophomores enrolled in elementary education courses, with a clear direction of entering the Teacher Education Program. Recipients must have a 2.75 cumulative GPA and provide two letters of recommendation.The award may be renewed for a second semester (spring) provided the recipient maintains a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75.

Phi Delta Kappa Chapter 78 Undergraduate Education Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $1,600

Criteria: Continuing undergraduate elementary or secondary education students with a GPA of 3.3 or higher who have been actively involved in volunteer service and have financial need.

Phi Delta Kappa Chapter 78 Graduate Education Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $1,600

Criteria: Education graduate student in a declared masters or doctoral degree program with a GPA of 3.6 or higher who has been actively involved in volunteer service and has financial need.

Charles R. and Nancy L. Zadra Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $1,500

Criteria: undergraduate or graduate students in the Phyllis J. Washington College of Education with a minimum GPA of 3.2 who intend to teach after graduation and who show promise as future teachers. Preference shall be given to students who intend to teach in the field of art or music education or who are minoring in drama or dance. If no applicants are identified who intend to teach art or music education or who are minoring in drama or dance, a student who otherwise meets the criteria shall be selected. Recipients shall be on-campus students taking the majority of courses on campus.

John and Susan Zaugra Graduate Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $1,400

Criteria: Graduate students studying elementary education in the Phyllis J. Washington College of Education at the University of Montana. Awards shall be based on merit. If there are no qualified students studying elementary education, then graduate students studying education, school counseling, and/or planning to work with disadvantaged or rural children may be considered. Recipients may be renewed providing the recipient continues to meet the criteria.

Western Montana Retired Educators Association Scholarship 

Anticipated Amount: $3,000

(Two $1,500 awards)

Criteria:  An undergraduate teacher licensure student who will be a senior during the award year; full admission to the teacher education program; minimum GPA of 3.5; potential as a teacher as demonstrated by successful completion of at least one field experience; and planning to teach in Montana. Preference will be given to qualifying candidates who include a support letter from a member of the Western Montana Retired Educators Association.

Orville Getz Memorial Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $2,200

Criteria: Accredited teachers who are participating in master's level work within the College of Education and are currently employed as a teacher or school administrator. Scholarships may be offered during the fall, spring and/or summer academic sessions, and may be offered for students participating in courses on-campus and/or online. Recipients must be from Missoula, Sanders, Mineral, Ravalli and Granite counties. Preference shall be given to current employees of Victor Public Schools and to members of the Montana Educators Credit Union.

Daniel and Christine Lee Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $1,000

Criteria: First-generation undergraduate or graduate students in any degree program at the Phyllis J. Washington College of Education. Recipients must have a grade point average of a 2.8 or higher.

Margy and Kenneth Kohl Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $1,000

Criteria: Recipients must be a Montana resident admitted to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) pursuing elementary education or secondary education licensure.  

Sarah Walton Education Scholarship

Anticipated Amount: $1,800

Criteria: Students who are enrolled in the Phyllis J. Washington College of Education. Preference shall be given to students who are members or alumnae of Kappa Kappa Gamma or other UM sororities. Recipients must have financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office or its equivalent in existence at the time of the award.
