Flexible Living Options
UM Housing offers a variety of Flexible Living Options to meet the needs of students living on campus. These options provide more choice in roommate assignments, suite styles, and community configurations.
Age Restricted and Upper-Division Housing
-
Located on designated floors in Pantzer Hall
-
Suite-style units with shared living spaces
-
Community of peers further along in their academic journey
Co-Ed Communities
In co-ed communities, students of different genders live throughout the same floor or community. Roommate assignments are same-gender by default, with co-ed roommate pairings available for students who express interest in this living arrangement through Part Two of the residence hall application, the roommate selection process, or room selection.
-
Located in designated wings in Glacier Hall and Knowles Hall.
-
Each residential community has bath areas that combine open, shared sinks and mirrors with individually enclosed single-user toilet rooms, single-user shower rooms, and in some cases fully accessible bathrooms. Each toilet room, shower room, and full bathroom is designed for one person at a time and features a locking door and floor-to-ceiling privacy. The bath areas are shared by residents of the community and their guests rather than assigned to individual rooms or suites.
-
-
Students must opt in to this community - no student will be placed here unless they have requested to live here
-
Pantzer Hall is also a co-ed residential community, with students of different genders living throughout the building. However, roommate and suitemate assignments are same-gender by default unless all participating students opt into a co-ed suite arrangement.
Co-Ed Suites
Students of different genders may choose to live within the same suite, with private bedrooms and shared common spaces. Room, suite, and apartment assignments are same-gender by default. Students who opt in to a co-ed suite may request specific roommates or participate individually, with remaining bedrooms available for selection or assignment by other students who have also opted into co-ed suite living. Students may also create their own co-ed roommate groups when all students mutually request to live together.
Flexible Roommate Opportunities
Flexible roommate opportunities are available in the room preference and selection processes in designated co-ed communities. These provide opportunities for students of different genders to share rooms, suites, and apartments by mutual choice. Students may participate by creating their own roommate group, selecting available spaces during room selection, or opting into consideration for placement with other students who have expressed interest in this living arrangement.
- Available in designated co-ed community areas of Glacier, Knowles, and Pantzer Halls (and in UM Housing apartment communities through those application processes)
- Students may create roommate groups and room with students of different genders by mutual request
- Students without a specific roommate request may indicate interest in mixed-gender roommate or suitemate assignments and may select or be placed into available spaces with other interested students
- Participation is always optional. Students who do not express interest in mixed-gender roommate or suitemate assignments will continue to be assigned using the standard same-gender placement process
How to Apply
Students should submit their residence hall application as soon as possible after it opens in October, as room selection priority is based on the date the application is submitted. Beginning in March, students can indicate their Living Learning Community and other Flexible Housing Option preferences in their myHousingPortal. Students eligible for room selection can select and change their own room while room selection is open. Housing will assign students who are not eligible for room selection or do not select a room based on their preferences and available space. After room selection ends, students can request a different room or LLC through the summer waitlist.
