Equipment to support student research
Students participating in the SPARK program will have access to the following equipment to support their research projects:
- The Wynd Tracker is a small PM2.5 monitor that can be attached to the student to record personal PM2.5 exposures in real time, or be set in a stationary location to measure indoor and/or outdoor PM2.5.
- Wynd Personal Purifiers are available for air filtration simulations and demonstrations.
- PurpleAir PA-II sensors - In addition to measuring PM2.5, the sensors also measure temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure. The weather resistant PurpleAir sensors are connected to school Wi-Fi, if available, or paired with a Wi-Fi hotspot (Solis Lite, Skyroam, Inc., USA). Note: a limited number of PurpleAir monitors are available.
- Halo air quality monitors. These instruments measure carbon dioxide, temperature, relative humidity, and particulate matter, and are primarily used in the indoor setting.
- Do-it-yourself (DIY) filtration units (Corsi-Rosenthal box filters). This is a cheaper alternative to the 3M Filtrete air purifiers, and can be built, deployed, and evaluated during wildfire smoke events.
