Vote Yes For a The UC Critical Repair Fee
The University Center (UC) is asking students to vote YES on a $57 increase to the existing UC Fee, beginning Fall 2026.
ASUM General Election | April 22–23, 2026
The UC is facing aging infrastructure and deferred maintenance needs that can no longer be fully addressed through existing operating funds.
Many of the building’s core systems were installed decades ago and are now reaching or past their expected lifespan. A fee increase would allow us to address critical failures rather than responding to emergencies.
This investment will be dedicated solely to major repairs, improvements, and modernization of the UC—the most-used student building on campus.
What Would the Fee Increase Pay For?
Infrastructure & Building Systems
- Critical roof repairs to stop and prevent leaks
- Replacement of the original glass skylight ceiling in the UC Atrium
- Adding heating and cooling to the UC Atrium
- Improved climate control in student work, dining, study, and gathering areas
- Addressing deferred maintenance impacting long-term building reliability
- Energy efficiency and sustainability improvements
Accessibility & Safety Improvements
- Replacement of the Food Court floor to keep the area operational
- Updates to first-floor entrances to improve accessibility, flow, and climate control
- Ongoing compliance with evolving building and accessibility standards
Student Spaces
- Modernizing student “third spaces” to study, collaborate, and unwind
- Modernizing the UC Food Court to provide expanded dining options and hours to the students
- Supporting updated technology, furniture, and infrastructure
- Preventing the loss or closure of student-focused spaces
What Would Happen if it's Not Passed?
- Repairs would be delayed or done reactively
- Over $127,000 is currently spent each year on work orders that patch failing systems—money that could otherwise support daily operations or planned improvements.
- Operating costs would continue to rise
- Labor and material costs would increase annually. Acting now maximizes the impact of each student dollar.
- Student services and spaces would be impacted
- Building hours, access to spaces, services, and programming availability may be reduced.
- Safety, access, and reliability become harder to guarantee
