The Boren scholarship offers awards to undergraduate and graduate students committed to public service. Boren funds study abroad programs ranging from 12 weeks to a full year. Selection is based on the project’s applicability to national security. All programs must include a language component. Common sites include Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Boren award recipients commit to one year of work in the federal government after service.

This program gives American and German young professionals the chance to participate in a cultural exchange. This experience is open to all career fields, and prior German language knowledge is not required. The program consists of three phases:
- Two months of intensive language training at a school in Germany
- One semester of classes at a German university
- 3 – 5 months of a relevant internship in Germany

Spend a summer overseas with CLS! This program provides funding for an 8–10-week immersive summer study abroad experience that highlights linguistics and culture. From the CLS website, students “learn languages of strategic importance to the United States’ national security and economic prosperity.” This experience is equivalent to one year of language study. Some programs require language proficiency; other programs are beginner friendly. Languages offered include Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili.

Named for Eloise Cobell, an advocate for Native American justice, the Cobell Scholarship supports Native students pursuing higher education. Whether students are seeking funding to earn an undergraduate degree or pursue a doctoral degree, there are opportunities for everyone. The Department of War SMART scholarship program provides students in STEM fields with resources to excel academically and launch their career. This scholarship provides students with more than just financial support. It also offers summer internship opportunities, a dedicated mentor, and a career with the Department of War as a civilian employee after graduation. The opportunity is available to both undergraduate and graduate students.

Provides up to $5,000 in merit-based scholarships for short- or long-term study abroad experiences to outstanding undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need. Supplemental awards for critical-need languages and STEM are available. A wide variety of programs are accepted; find more information on the Gilman website to ensure what programs and study countries are eligible. Post-program job support and follow-up on service projects are included in the experience.

The Barry M. Goldwater scholarship provides up to $7,500 for tuition, fees, books, and room/board for undergraduate students who intend to pursue a research-based career in a STEM field. Successful applicants show commitment to this career path through meaningful participation in research and demonstrated ownership in all or part of the research project.

Sponsored by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education, this program provides international students with funding to study Mandarin at an official language center in Taiwan. These applications are handled by the Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO). Applicants should first apply for their chosen language school and then use proof of that application to apply for the scholarship. Applications are submitted online but must also be physically mailed to the address of the TECO office that overseas their state of residency. (Montana --> San Francisco). There are 2 month summer programs up to full year opportunities.

The Education Office of the Embassy of Spain provides stipends for American college students and graduates to teach English and act as cultural ambassadors in primary and secondary schools across Spain. Working under a lead teacher, language assistants will have the opportunity to work in a classroom in Spain for 8 months. There are programs offered in nearly every region of Spain. Positions can be renewed for up to 4 years. Some level of Spanish knowledge is recommended to participate in daily life.

Commitment to bettering these fields demonstrated through public service is a valued aspect of this award. Scholarships can be used to cover undergraduate academic expenses. The Obama-Chesky Voyager Scholarship for Public Service is for students who have a passion for civic engagement and experience serving their communities. Designed for undergraduate juniors and seniors, this two-year scholarship provides financial support, travel opportunities, and more experiences suited to develop skills for a future profession in public service. This opportunity includes a Summer Voyager experience: a paid summer travel/work experience designed by the student, as well as a Fall Summit.
