The Boren scholarship offers awards to undergraduate and graduate students committed to public service. Boren funds study abroad programs ranging from 12 weeks to a full year. Selection is based on the project’s applicability to national security. All programs must include a language component. Common sites include Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Boren award recipients commit to one year of work in the federal government after service.

The Bridging Program provides undergraduate students who demonstrate academic merit and financial need the opportunity to study abroad in Japan. There are semester (minimum 3 months) and yearlong programs. Students from any field are encouraged to apply. Time abroad must be spent at a credit bearing Japanese University and credits must be transferable back to the home institution.

This program gives American and German young professionals the chance to participate in a cultural exchange. This experience is open to all career fields, and prior German language knowledge is not required. The program consists of three phases:
- Two months of intensive language training at a school in Germany

- 3 – 5 months of a relevant internship in Germany

Spend a summer overseas with CLS! This program provides funding for an 8–10-week immersive summer study abroad experience that highlights linguistics and culture. From the CLS website, students “learn languages of strategic importance to the United States’ national security and economic prosperity.” This experience is equivalent to one year of language study. Some programs require language proficiency; other programs are beginner friendly. Languages offered include Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili.

Sponsored by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education, this program provides international students with funding to study Mandarin at an official language center in Taiwan. These applications are handled by the Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO). Applicants should first apply for their chosen language school and then use proof of that application to apply for the scholarship. Applications are submitted online but must also be physically mailed to the address of the TECO office that overseas their state of residency. (Montana --> San Francisco). There are 2 month summer programs up to full year opportunities.

The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience is a non-profit organization that provides primarily STEM internships across 100 different countries. Internships can range from 6 weeks up to 1 year. Participants will gain professional experience and develop an extensive network of like-minded peers and scholars. There is a registration fee ($100) to gain access to a database of available internships. You can choose what is right for you and apply at any time, with most internship opportunities opening in February-April. A US IAESTE council will nominate one student for each position.

MEXT is the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in Japan. This government program provides scholarships for undergraduate students to study culture and language at a university in Japan for one year.
